Alpine has had to change its rear wing for the Chinese GP

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner is unsure how the latest clampdown on flexi-wings will impact the Formula 1 pecking order as Alpine is forced to make a change.

The FIA informed teams ahead of the new season that front wing flex-limitations will be restricted as of Round 9, with rear wing flex restrictions in place at the season opener to the tune of 2 mm vertical movement on the main plane under a load of 75 kg.

However, during pre-season testing, Red Bull Technical Director Pierre Wache accused the likes of McLaren and Ferrari of abusing rear-wing flex rules, a phenom colloquially referred to as ‘mini-DRS’ after Oscar Piastri’s MCL38 was scrutinised in Baku last year.

The FIA found no teams in breach of rear wing flex regulations at the season-opener in Melbourne, but its surveillance prompted a new technical directive, effective for this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, slashing the flexibility limit from 2mm to 0.5mm.

McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes haven’t had to make changes as a result of the Technical Directive, but there has been a change for some of the midfield outfits.

Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu told the Sky Sports broadcast team during practice at the Shanghai International Circuit that the VF-25 has had to stiffen its rear wing after being close to the margin on the 2mm limit in Melbourne.

As well as this, Alpine Racing Director Dave Greenwood confirmed to Motorsport.com that his team has made a change.

“We’ve had to do some work back at the factory to make sure we were in a correct place here, but I think that’s fairly normal in these situations,” he said.

“When a rule and an allowance of deflection changes, you need to check that you are going to be able to comply with that as well.

“I think you can imagine the time scales were very small, so it’s not like you can do something revolutionary. But yeah, there are things we can do to make sure we comply.”

Horner unsure of TD impact

Given that none of the top four teams have admitted to making changes, adamant that the rear wing flexibility has been adhered to both at Melbourne and Shanghai, it’s hard to see how this latest technical directive will impact the pecking order.

This was predominantly the thoughts of Horner when he was asked about the new rules during Friday’s press conference in China.

“Well, I mean, the FIA, it’s their job obviously to police these things,” Horner said.

“They obviously saw things that they weren’t particularly happy with at the last race.

“So therefore, as is their prerogative, they’ve tightened up those regulations through TD that came out this week.

“Now, what effect it has up and down the grid, I really don’t know.

“But that’s just part and parcel of Formula 1. TDs are almost forthcoming on a weekly basis.”

What could create a bigger impact, is the front wing flex clampdown in Spain later this year.

Horner has already commented on the matter, querying the timing.

“Yeah, it’ll be interesting the effect that it has – I guess the slight oddball about it is the timing of it,” Horner said.

“Why race nine? It might have been better to have been addressed during the off-season, because you end up doing sort of two specs of wings.

“But who will gain or who will lose from it, I think, is impossible to predict.”

Jack Doohan stated how he has ‘a contract for at least this year, if not more’ in response to questions over his future in F1

Alpine racing driver Jack Doohan has avoided questions surrounding his future in Formula 1 amidst Helmut Marko’s latest brutal assessment of the rookie.

Marko ranked all of the ‘rookies’, including Doohan, in a recent interview with the Red Bull-owned television channel Servus TV.

The senior advisor for the Milton Keynes-based team believes the Australian is the weakest newcomer to F1, suggesting that Alpine may dismiss him before the end of the season.

“He is a ‘C’,” the Austrian replied when asked to grade the 22-year-old.

“I don’t think he will complete the season.”

This isn’t the first time Marko has expressed how he was left unimpressed with Doohan’s skills as a racing driver.

Back in January, he mentioned that he expected more from Doohan’s F1 debut in Abu Dhabi.

The former Formula 2 graduate has faced questions about his future throughout the off-season, even though he has yet to compete in a Grand Prix in 2025.

Franco Colapinto was signed to Alpine as its reserve driver at the start of the year, with reports suggesting he could replace Doohan during the season.

Team supervisor Flavio Briatore insisted that the Enstone-based squad would stick with the Aussie for the start of the season, but he added: “After that, we will see.”

In response to the outside noise, Doohan said how he chooses to ignore the paddock gossip, ahead of his home race – the Australian Grand Prix.

“I haven’t been thinking about any of that because, as you all know, there’s no point thinking about rumours or commenting on them,” he told media including Motorsport Week.

“But I have a contract for at least this year, if not more.

“So, I look forward to many home grands prix.”

Doohan: ‘I’m going to enjoy every race as if it’s my last’

The Gold Coast-born racing driver went on to point out how he has four drivers after his seat on the grid, as Alpine recently hired Kush Maini to its reserve drivers list alongside Colapinto, Paul Aron and Ryo Hirakawa.

But whilst there is more competition for Doohan, he insists that his focus remains on enjoying every second of his time in the Alpine car.

“And the uncertainties? You don’t bother worrying about them,” he added.

“I have to perform each and every time I’m in the car.

“I have one guy chasing my seat, but we actually have four now, if you didn’t realise, we have four reserves.

“You have all four of them, not just Franco, [who] probably wants my seat and if not, Pierre’s [Gasly] as well.

“And I wanted their seats while I was reserve driver the last two years.

“So, I’m going to enjoy, to be honest, every race as if it’s my last because I want to enjoy each and every moment I’m in the car.”

Franco Colapinto (ARG) Williams Racing. 06.12.2024. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 24, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, Practice Day

Franco Colapinto’s manager has condemned the “abuse” aimed at Jack Doohan as rumours continue to swirl around his role in the Alpine Formula 1 team.

The 21-year-old was signed by the Anglo-French marque as a reserve driver for this season, having been sprung from his previous contract with Williams.

Colapinto had competed in the remaining nine rounds of the previous campaign with the Grove-based squad, scoring five points.

Alpine had already promoted Jack Doohan to its race roster alongside Pierre Gasly, but since his signing, Colapinto has been the subject of speculation that he will replace the Australian early in the upcoming campaign.

Both Team Principal Oliver Oakes and Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore have been coy on the subject, fuelling the rumours further, with the former telling Le Parisien he will “change” a driver who “isn’t bringing me results”.

Many fans are now taking to social media to direct frustration and anger at the situation, which prompted Jamie Campbell-Walter – a director of Bullet Sports Management, Colapinto’s representatives – to wade in.

Responding to a post on X urging people to ‘stop posting nonsense on Alpine’s account,’ Campbell-Walter replied: “Well said!

“The haters who think they help Franco, you are doing him more harm than good.

“Insults to the team, to Jack and sometimes to other supporters of Alpine.

“Franco and all of us who support him are fans of the whole team, Pierre [Gasly] and Jack.

“Conduct yourselves with passion but not abuse and arrogance. Franco’s time will come but not like this, you will achieve the opposite.”

Jack Doohan has been signed to partner Pierre Gasly, but rumours about being ousted have been prominent

Steiner rebukes ‘exaggerated’ Alpine speculation

Former Haas boss-turned-media figure Guenther Steiner has offered his opinion on the situation, affirming that the topic has been somewhat over-embroidered.

“I think the pressure comes from outside,” Steiner told Speedcafe.

“A lot of these things which are happening in F1 is like someone said, ‘Oh, he has got only six races, and then it will be decided’.

“Somebody said it, somebody repeated it, and it got bigger and bigger.

“I don’t even know if it’s true because nobody knows where it came from.

“So, for me, it’s an exaggerated rumour.”

Steiner went on to say that Doohan will not be the only driver on the grid under pressure and that his father – legendary motorcycle racer Mick – will be an important presence in ensuring he can handle the expectations.

“Obviously, in F1, it’s not only him under pressure; everyone needs to perform,” Steiner reasoned.

“If he performs, he will be fine, there will be no problem.

“He has got his father, Mick, the legend, around, so he will help him to go through this pressure he has got on.

“When you are a race car driver, you have always got pressure.

“I just don’t see where it came from,” he added of the speculation.

“It wasn’t an official statement, so if there’s no official statement, I always assume that somebody opened his mouth not knowing what he’s saying, just wanting a headline.

“Jack needs to stay calm, do what he’d good at, race cars, and then the performance will come, and he will be here to stay.

“I may have simplified it a little bit, but that’s what it is about.”

Alpine Academy member and Formula 2 driver Kush Maini has been signed by Alpine as a test and reserve driver for the upcoming Formula 1 season.

The Indian’s role within the French squad is expanding with the announcement, and joins Ryo Hirakawa, Paul Aron and Franco Colapinto as back-ups to regular race drivers Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan.

Maini will be present at much of the F1 races this year, on a count of continuing his stint in F2, switching to DAMS Lucas Oil after partnering reigning champion and new Sauber signing Gabriel Bortoleto at Invicta Racing last year.

“I am delighted to step up to the role of Test and Reserve Driver for BWT Alpine Formula 1 Team this season,” said Maini.

“Since joining the Alpine Academy ahead of last year, I have been incredibly welcomed in the entire Alpine family and I am thankful to Flavio [Briatore] and Oliver [Oakes] for their continued support.

“I am looking forward to getting more track time in Formula 1 machinery in this role and to build on what I have already learned with the team in 2024.

“I’m very excited to begin the role as soon as possible but for now my focus is on my third season in Formula 2 kicking off this weekend in Australia.”

Alpine’s Academy Director Julian Rouse said: “We are very happy to announce the expansion of Kush’s role in the Alpine Academy to include Test and Reserve Driver duties for the team this season.

“Kush has impressed the team across his TPC performances and Formula 2 results whilst we have been working with him and we expect he will continue to do so in 2025.

“His wider role allows us to further expand our pool of driving talent who can provide support and resource to the whole team during the busy season.”

Pierre Gasly has hailed the impact of Flavio Briatore at Alpine

Pierre Gasly has hailed the “important” impact that Flavio Briatore has had since returning to the Alpine Formula 1 team.

After a dismal start to 2024, Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo enlisted the services of Briatore in June, appointing him as an Executive Advisor at Alpine.

The enigmatic Italian spearheaded the Anglo-French outfit’s title-winning exploits as Team Principal during its Benetton days in the mid-1990s and again in the mid-2000s when the squad competed at Renault.

His controversial dealings with ‘crashgate’ aside, Briatore’s wealth of experience at Alpine is being deployed to turn the team back into a championship-winning force.

Since working with the Italian, Gasly has been positively impacted by what he has seen.

“I’m not with him every single day, but I can tell he’s bringing leadership,” Gasly told select media including Motorsport Week ahead of F1 75.

“That’s what we need in a F1 team. You need to have a leader who knows exactly where to bring his truth with 1,500 employees.

“We all need to be leaders, drivers included, but especially from the top management.

“He’s got experience in F1. He’s got incredibly good connections, whether it’s on the technical side or whether it’s on the management side in terms of sponsors.

“I think he’s been in the sport long enough to understand how it works and he’s brought Alpine or Enstone already to the top.

“Times have changed, but his dedication and commitment and motivation to make it happen again hasn’t changed.

“This is something very important, which I’m very glad to see.

“It’s a very clear vision, which is important in a team.”

Alpine heading in the right direction – Gasly

Briatore wasn’t the only leadership change made at Alpine in 2024 as Oliver Oakes was ushered in as Team Principal in August.

Briatore and Oakes are tasked with steering Alpine back to the top of F1 and began doing so by encouraging a late surge from ninth to sixth in the 2024 Constructors’ standings.

It’s a platform everyone at Alpine is keen to push on from and Gasly is optimistic with Briatore and Oakes in charge.

“I’m very pleased since Oli and Flav joined the team,” the Frenchman said.

“You can clearly see the mindset and the spirit of the team is heading in the right direction.

“I think the processes in all departments are really being challenged and delivering the best they can and that’s what we’re doing.

“There’s still a long way to go, but Flavio is a competitor. He’s in F1 to win. I’m in F1 to win.

“Oli is in F1 to bring the team to the top and also to win.

“It’s going to take the time we need, but definitely as a team I can see a lot of positivity and tell we’re going in the right way.”

Alpine isn't set on when it will change course with its F1 development between 2025 and '26

Alpine Team Principal Oliver Oakes believes the Anglo-French Formula 1 outfit is “not very flexible” regarding the switch from 2025 to 2026 car development.

With chassis, aero, powertrain and tyre changes coming for the 2026 season, all 10 F1 teams face a difficult development conundrum: when do you cease development on your current car in favour of stealing a march on the competition next year?

Again, all 10 teams have already begun work on their cars for next year, but the sliding scale of development is tipped firmly in the direction of 2025 given the season hasn’t even started yet.

2025 is poised to be one of the tightest seasons in F1 history and that goes for the front of the pack and the midfield, a fight Alpine finds itself firmly in.

Perhaps that is why Oakes told select media including Motorsport Week during pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit that Alpine is “not very flexible” on when it can put a full stop on 2025 development.

“I can’t speak for other teams, but I think everybody’s sort of juggling that, maybe even a little bit already, because just as you get this car out the door, you’re already having your sort of discussions on planning and what you’re doing,” Oakes said.

“So I think for us as a team, we’re quite lucky that we’re trying to balance both, because in the end we’re not a small team, but we’re also not one of the big teams either.

“But I think you’re going to see that, especially after the first few races, it’s pretty evident of where your attention needs to be.”

Alpine wants to start 'clipping at the heels' of the top F1 teams
Alpine wants to start ‘clipping at the heels’ of the top F1 teams

Will Alpine’s 2025 targets affect 2026 development?

Essentially, any team that is clearly falling short of its season targets after the first few races of 2025 will more than likely shut development down in favour of a full-scale assault on 2026.

For Alpine, the target is to continue where it finished 2024 strongly as the benchmark midfield runner.

“I think continuing the second part of last year and I say that a little bit hesitantly, because I think it’s so competitive in that midfield,” Oakes said of his season target.

“But I think we feel confident where we ended last year, we want to start this year on that same footing.”

Moreover, Oakes said “I think our target is to continue where we ended up at the end of last year, which is we kind of want to be clipping at the heels of those [front] teams.”

It’s a target that Alpine has had before and fallen short of, and rest assured if the team starts 2025 like it did last year, in calamitous fashion, focus on 2026 will start with haste.

But by all metrics Alpine looks to be in a good place regarding the midfield fight, and that perceived lack of flexibility Oakes mentioned could indicate an expectation of a lengthy battle with the likes of Haas and Williams to win the crown of best of the rest this year.

Alpine wants to start 'clipping at the heels' of the top F1 teams

Alpine boss Oliver Oakes has targeted heading Formula 1’s midfield battle and “clipping at the heels” of the established top teams during the 2025 season.

That was the Anglo-French marque’s target at the start of 2024, but those hopes were quickly dashed during pre-season testing and the season opener as Alpine was comfortably at the back of the field this time last year.

Oakes, who became Team Principal in August, oversaw a late surge by Alpine, bolstered by upgrades and a surprise double podium in Brazil that saw the team finish sixth in the Constructors’ standings.

Through the final races of 2024, Pierre Gasly was a consistent top-10 threat in qualifying and race conditions and Oakes wants to pick up from where the team left off.

In response to McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella theorising more teams outside of his outfit, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull could challenge, Oakes was asked if Alpine could be one of those in the mix.

“I’m trying to think what I say, because otherwise you sound like you’re not positive,” Oakes told select media including Motorsport Week.

“But I think, if I’m honest, I think always you can see those front teams that are a step ahead.

“I think our target is to continue where we ended up at the end of last year, which is we kind of want to be clipping at the heels of those teams.

“That’s not to say we’re defeatist, but we’re also quite humbled that it’s bloody close as well.”

Success means winning the F1 midfield battle at Alpine
Success means winning the F1 midfield battle at Alpine

Winning F1 midfield battle a measure of success for Alpine

The F1 midfield battle is poised to be tighter than ever in 2025.

Alpine won out against Haas and Racing Bulls for sixth in the Constructors’ standings last year, with Aston Martin’s stronger start keeping it out of reach in fifth.

Aston Martin’s slump and Williams’ strong showing in testing show that four or five teams could be scrapping over fifth in the championship this time around.

Measuring success at this stage is hard, but when asked, Oakes said he wants Alpine to kick on from its strong finish last year and continue to be at the midfield’s forefront.

“I think continuing the second part of last year and I say that a little bit hesitantly, because I think it’s so competitive in that midfield,” Oakes said of his season target.

“And I think the whole grid bunching up, I think the swing of circuits as well.

“Obviously, I didn’t do the first part of last year, so going back to some of those tracks where I haven’t been and haven’t seen how the team performed firsthand.

“But I think we feel confident where we ended last year, we want to start this year on that same footing.

“And I think hopefully after these test days, we’re looking in good shape.”

Williams and Alpine have completed a 2026 Pirelli F1 tyre test

Alpine and Williams remained in Bahrain following the conclusion of Formula 1 pre-season testing to complete a two-day 2026 Pirelli tyre test.

Using specially modified 2023 F1 cars to mimic the 2026 regulations, the A523 and FW45 for Alpine and Williams respectively, the two teams tested the new construction of tyre.

On Sunday, Williams fielded Carlos Sainz and Alpine fielded its reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa, the duo tested the 2026 18-inch tyres which are 25mm narrower at the front and 30mm at the rear.

Sainz and Hirawaka tested the same compounds throughout their running but with tyres made up of various different constructions, completing 116 and 131 laps respectively.

Sainz’s fastest time was a 1:34.740 while Hirakwa posted a 1:35.336.

On Monday, Alex Albon and Paul Aron took over the driving duties for Williams and Alpine respectively and instead of testing varying constructions, the duo instead ran one construction but three different compounds, C1 through C3.

Aron covered 130 laps, the fastest in 1:35.407s.

Albon, meanwhile, completed 120 laps with a best time of 1:35.667s.

The next Pirelli 2026 tyre test will be carried out by Mercedes at Silverstone on May 7-8 to test intermediated and extreme wet tyres.

Pirelli hails ‘significant’ data gathering in Bahrain

“Another very useful day for the development of the 2026 tyres,” commented Mario Isola, Pirelli’s Director of Motorsport.

“Almost 2,700 kilometres completed, we have been able to gather a significant amount of data to take forward in our programme.

“I would like to really thank the drivers and teams who extended their stay at the Bahrain track by a further three days at what is such a busy time, with less than two weeks to go to the first race.

“In Sakhir we continued with a comparison of different types of construction and compound, the latter at the hardest end of the range, to suit the characteristics of this track.

“Now, our colleagues in R&D will analyse the information carefully and provide useful indications so that we can continue to improve the product for the next generation of cars.”

Alpine boss Oliver Oakes was quizzed on the surprise Formula 1 paddock return of Dmitry Mazepin during pre-season testing amid the Russian’s former links to the Hitech junior outfit.

Mazepin famously sponsored the Haas F1 team in 2021 through his company Uralkali and the Russian billionaire’s backing helped install his son Niita into a race seat.

However, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Haas parted company with the Mazepins with immediate effect and Uralkali’s owner remains under EU sanctions.

That doesn’t stop the Russian oligarch from visiting the F1 paddock with the correct credentials, but curiously nobody in Bahrain was able to account for how Mazepin gained entry into the paddock.

Mazepin made visits to Mercedes and Alpine but no F1 team had any knowledge of who handed the Russian a pass into the paddock, with a source relaying to ESPN: “Dmitry was on a personal visit. He has remained friends with many people in the Formula 1 family and was happy to see them in Bahrain.”

One of the people Mazepin bumped into in the F1 pre-season testing paddock was Oakes.

Mazepin was a major backer of Oakes’ Hitech outfit pre-EU sanctions and his son raced for the junior team.

Speculation suggests that Renault CEO Luca de Meo wants to offload his Alpine F1 team to interested parties and that advisor Flavio Briatore’s job is to facilitate a sale.

Alpine Team Principal Oakes was quizzed on the curious nature of Mazepin’s paddock visit.

“Yes. I’ve said hello to him, I haven’t met him,” he told select media including Motorsport Week.

“Yes, he’s a friend of mine, yes I used to be together with him in Hitech.

“He was here catching up with another friend of his.

“It’s nice to see him. I’m not going to go into that, the world’s a crazy place”.

Alpine is not for sale

Time and again, de Meo, Briatore and Oakes have had to refute the notion that the Alpine F1 team could be up for sale.

Fuelling that speculation was the team’s decision to scrap its works engine development in Viry-Chatillon in favour of becoming a Mercedes power unit customer from 2026 onwards.

Slicing the Viry element out of the Anglo-French equation makes a sale of the team simpler, but the line from members of the team is that it isn’t going to be happening.

Speaking at last year’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Oakes said “I know everybody likes to write that [de Meo] wants to sell the team, which isn’t true.

“He’s always been very firm that he’s in F1 for the long term.

“You can see really how passionate he is about this project. I’m grateful to have him.”

Briatore has been even more adamant that Alpine isn’t for sale.

Speaking to Autosport last year, Briatore said “No, there is nothing for sale.

“Everything, we buy. If we had the opportunity, we [would] buy another one team and I put a managing director in.

“Something is very clear. Luca de Meo never wants to sell the team. Question finito.”

Alpine has responded to more questions about Jack Doohan's future

Alpine boss Oliver Oakes has insisted the team has been “honest” regarding its driver line-up in Formula 1 amid the persistent rumours surrounding Jack Doohan’s drive.

Doohan, who made his F1 debut at the 2024 season finale in Abu Dhabi, is embarking on his rookie campaign having been picked to replace the now-departed Esteban Ocon.

But Alpine signing Franco Colapinto to the team’s reserve driver pool has heightened speculation that he is being lined up to take Doohan’s spot, even as soon as this season.

That has been even extended to reports circulating that an exit clause in his contract could become active should he not hit certain targets within the opening five rounds.

When asked whether he could shut down that claim, Oakes told media including Motorsport Week: “It’s not my line. I think we’ve been really honest as a team as to what we’re doing.

“I’m pretty chilled on it, and I think it would be nice – I keep saying it – but just let Jack just get on with it, and also let the team get on with it, to be honest.

But while he reiterated that Doohan will begin the season with Pierre Gasly, Oakes didn’t rule out that a mid-season change to place Colapinto in the A525 could transpire.

“I get everybody has an opinion,” he continued. “Everyone can be a keyboard warrior as well.

“It’s very simple, though, isn’t it? We’re here to go racing. We want the best driver in the car, the best engine in the car.

“From my side, I was pretty open that Jack’s – well, Flavio [Briatore] said it, didn’t he – that we’re starting the season with Jack and Pierre, and then let’s see how it all goes.”

Doohan would have had pressure regardless

Oakes denied that Colapinto’s arrival has been done to increase pressure on Doohan, citing that the emphasis on him to deliver in 2025 would have been present regardless.

“I think externally everyone sees that, but I see it a bit differently,” he retorted.

“No matter what driver you are, in any category, there’s pressure. It doesn’t matter whether that’s in F1 or even in the junior categories.

“Of course, I think because Franco did a good job last year, he’s got a big fan base, obviously a lot of them here as well, it’s natural that people want to talk about that.

“But from the other side, I think as a team we’re quite lucky to have three reserves who are very good, and that puts us in a good position.

“I think in terms of whether it’s nice or kind to Jack, I think I was pretty open that he’s driving a Formula 1 car, that’s every boy’s dream, but it’s also his job, and for me, that’s pretty simple.”

Alpine not releasing Doohan expectation

Meanwhile, Oakes wouldn’t be drawn on whether it has laid out expectations to Doohan, highlighting how that will depend on how driveable Alpine’s car proves to be.

Asked what would represent a reasonable gap between his two drivers, he replied: “I don’t know.

“You’ll want a lot of words from me, but you’re not going to put anything like that out there.

“I think it’s pretty easy to see this year, at the end of the day there’s a lot of rookies on the grid, so you can see how they’re all performing.

“It’s not necessarily the same for one as it is for another, we know some cars are easier to drive, some are trickier to drive. I think hopefully it won’t even be a discussion anyway.”
