The 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button has already noticed a significant amount of changes to the 2025 Williams car ahead of the new season.

Entering the final year before the new regulation comes into place for the 2026 season, teams are expected to make very few alterations from 2024 in preparation for the new rules.

After McLaren unveiled the MCL39 on Thursday, Williams showcased its FW47 at the same track in Silverstone.

The Grove-based squad have a new driver for 2025 with Carlos Sainz making the switch from Ferrari to partner alongside Alex Albon.

It was the Spaniard who took to the track on Valentine’s Day with a special launch livery, as the British team will reveal its actual livery at the F1 75 Live event this Monday.

Button, however, observed several modifications to the Williams car as he stood beside the FW47 during the live launch event on Williams’ YouTube channel.

“First of all, looks beautiful, it really does,” Button said.

“As you guys probably know there’s not going to be massive changes with any F1 cars in 2025 but there seems to be quite a lot of changes to the FW47, which is great to see.”

Team principal James Vowles shared the opinion of the Williams’ ambassador whilst speaking to the media including Motorsport Week.

“Every area I look at in the car is just a world of difference for me from where we were before,” he said.

Williams’ focus has been on ‘high downforce’ says Button

The British outfit finished ninth in the Constructors’ Standings last season, scoring 17 points across 24 rounds.

The 45-year-old was keen to highlight the key areas which the team have targeted for its development heading into the 2025 F1 season.

“Areas they’ve been working on have been high downforce corners, but also sensitivity,” Button explained.

“Sensitivity meaning with the downforce, it’s very easy to have a peak downforce level which is always exciting to see the number.

“But it’s the usable downforce that you really want to have.

“So in corner downforce, laterally loaded downforce and entry into corners, which gives the drivers a lot of confidence.”

Vowles achieved the best result for the team since 2017 in his first season as team principal of the iconic motor racing brand.

The former Mercedes employee will have a race winner at his disposal with Sainz eager to lead the Williams revival back to the front of the grid.

Jacques Villeneuve has returned to Williams as an ambassador

Williams has announced that 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has returned to the team in an ambassadorial role for the upcoming 2025 season.

Having excelled in American single-seater racing with an IndyCar title and an Indy500 win, Villeneuve embarked upon a new venture in F1 with Williams back in 1996.

The Canadian won on his fourth F1 weekend at the Nurburgring and took three more victories that season to end up runner-up to team-mate Damon Hill, who then departed.

Alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Villeneuve secured Williams a championship double as he beat Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher to the crown in a controversial showdown at Jerez.

However, Villeneuve’s success would come to a halt as the Grove-based squad’s competitiveness plummeted, prompting him to exit once the 1998 campaign concluded.

Villeneuve, though, still remains the last driver to have claimed a title driving for Williams, the team having not taken a single race win since the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix.

Villeneuve has reunited with the side as an ambassador, a role that 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button and three-time W-Series champion Jamie Chadwick have retained.

“Williams has been a crucial part of my life, filled with fond memories,” Villeneuve said.

“I am ecstatic to be part of the family again, and to help celebrate the team’s heritage while supporting its future.”

Button and Chadwick retain Williams involvement

Button, who also began his F1 career with Williams in 2000, has been back with the British outfit since 2021 when he was appointed as a senior advisor to its drivers.

“Williams gave me my first shot in Formula 1, and it’s incredible to be celebrating 25 years since that debut this year,” Button expressed.

“Being an ambassador for this team is a privilege, and I’m excited to continue contributing to its legacy and future.”

Meanwhile, Chadwick, who raced in the Indy NXT support series in 2024, has been associated with Williams since 2019 when she initially joined as a development driver.

“Williams has been a huge part of my career and journey in motorsport over the last four years,” Chadwick added.

“I’m proud to continue representing the team in 2025, challenging myself to keep developing as a driver and helping to mentor the next generation of racers coming through F1 Academy.”

Williams boss James Vowles described it as a “privilege” to have Villeneuve alongside Button and Chadwick, labelling the trio as the “perfect representation of this iconic team”.

“Jenson and Jacques made their F1 debuts with Williams and went on to become World Champions, while Jamie has broken boundaries for women in motorsport as a Williams Racing driver and mentor to Lia. We are delighted to have them as part of the next chapter in Williams’ story,” he concluded.

Jenson Button has seen 'belief' restored at Williams

Jenson Button claims he has seen “belief” within the Williams outfit that it is back on the right path in Formula 1.

Button made his F1 debut with the team – then under the stewardship of founder Sir Frank Williams and technical guru Patrick Head – back in 2000, and rejoined as a senior advisor in 2021.

The 2009 World Champion, who also provides analysis for Sky Sports, has observed the similarities between his early days with the team and the present, during which time it has negotiated some rocky spells under the transition of ownership and new team principals.

“The atmosphere kind of feels the same as back in 2000,” Button told Crash.net.

“It feels fun, exciting, obviously serious when it comes to racing, but it is a nice family atmosphere.

“When I re-joined the team as an ambassador the atmosphere wasn’t quite the same,” he explained.

“You had people that have been here for a couple of decades, [even] three decades, and then you had an influx of new talent coming into the team.

“There was a need to put together the right leadership to bring everyone together to work as one.”

Despite enduring a difficult 2024 campaign, scoring just 17 points to finish ninth in the Constructors’ standings, Williams is a team determined to build for a better future.

That is the mantra of Team Principal James Vowles and Button believes Williams has “belief” from within that things are trending upward.

“Now I think there’s a lot more belief in the direction of where the team is going, which is so important when you’re trying to work together to build for the future,” he said.

Alpine-bound Colapinto ‘refreshing’

Button also heaped praise on Franco Colapinto, who raced in the final nine rounds of last season with Williams, scoring five points, tempting Alpine to poach him on a multi-year deal which begins with a reserve driver role in 2025.

“It’s been really refreshing to watch a driver jump into the car and be competitive from the word go,” Button said of the Argentine.

“I think we all have a lot of respect for Alex [Albon], how good he is and what he is able to achieve in this sport. For somebody young to be able to jump in and push him is very impressive.

“You learn from your teammates no matter how old or young they are, whether they’re inexperienced or experienced, you still learn from the data.

“It really helps the team move forward as well if they have two drivers that are competitive, that can learn from each other and move this team forward.”

Albon will of course face stern competition this year in the form of established Grand Prix-winner Carlos Sainz, who joins from Ferrari.

Jenson Button is coming to the end of his first full-FIA World Endurance Championship campaign

JOTA’s Jenson Button told Motorsport Week that he considers the FIA World Endurance Championship as one of the best in the world, ahead of the Bahrain season finale.

“For me, this championship is one of the best championships in the world right now, in terms of competition: Drivers, teams, manufacturers,” the #38 JOTA Porsche 963 driver said to Motorsport Week.

“To have 18 cars that can all fight for podiums, there’s nothing like that unless it’s a silhouette series.

“It’s a really fun time to be part of WEC. It’s been good fun.”

The Briton races in the #8 JOTA Porsche alongside Phil Hanson and Oliver Rasmussen. While the team hasn’t had the success they’ve been aiming at this year, Button says he’s learnt a lot, and enjoyed it.

“It’s been a lot of learning,” he said.

“It took me a few races to really get to grips with how the car feels and how you have to drive it. You drive something for so long in a certain way and then these cars are very different.

“It’s more like a big GT car really. You’ve got to be very aggressive with it, so it took a little bit of time [to adapt].

“The last few races, I’ve loved and really, really enjoyed.

“And I’ve enjoyed the the latter part of the season, very much from sort of Le Mans onwards.”

Button recorded his best season finish last time out at the 6 Hours of Fuji.

Along with his co-drivers Oliver Rasmussen and Phil Hanson, they scored sixth place in an action-packed race.

JOTA ‘like a big family’, says Button

Despite not claiming an overall podium yet, with the 8 Hours of Bahrain this weekend still to go, Jenson has relished his season with JOTA.

“They’re very professional, very good at what they do but it’s also like a big family.

“My two teammates are 23 and 25 [years old], but they’ve both raced more in endurance racing than I have.

“Phil [Hanson]’s done seven or eight Le Mans now, and I’ve only done three.

“We come with different experiences. I come with more life experiences than them.

“So, yeah it’s been really good. I think we’ve bounced off each other well, and everyone’s been very open to positive criticism.”

The 2009 Formula 1 world champion previously competed in select WEC rounds during the 2018-19 “super season”, with SMP Racing’s LMP1 project.

He then made his return at last year’s Centenary running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in the fan-favourite Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 stock car.

This year with JOTA, he recorded his best out of three Le Mans starts with ninth place, against 22 other Hypercars.

A 2025 return on the cards for Button

Button also told Motorsport Week that he intends to continue next year although has yet to secure a deal, as JOTA prepares for a new partnership with Cadillac.

“We’ll have to see…” he said, with a grin on his face, when asked if he’ll be back in the championship in 2025.

“I’ll be driving something, I just don’t know what,” he concluded before rushing off to a meeting.

2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button reckons that Red Bull will have no choice but to drop Sergio Perez should he fail to score in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Perez looked to have overcome the mid-season slump that characterised his past term as he began the current campaign with five podiums in the opening five races.

However, Perez hasn’t appeared on the rostrum in the seven races since amid another sharp decline in results as the grid has converged on Red Bull at the sharp end.

The Mexican has contributed a meagre 15 points across the past six rounds to slip 137 points behind team-mate Max Verstappen, creating doubt over his prospects.

Despite penning a multi-term contract extension, rumours have stated that Perez’s deal contains a clause that could see him axed should he be over 100 points back.

Regardless, Button has admitted Perez’s plight as an alarming situation and is convinced that Red Bull should consider a change should he underdeliver this weekend.

“It’s a massive, massive issue,” Button, who was team-mates with Perez at McLaren in 2013, told Sky Sports F1. “This [Silverstone] was a terrible weekend.

“It was unlucky in some ways as well. This isn’t going to happen every race weekend, but for McLaren to be taking this many points out of them, it’s big.

“He needs to be scoring some points at least. Even if he’s not directly behind Max. They can’t let it go on forever.

“I think in the next race, if he’s not scoring points again – soon enough they’ve got to get him out of the car and put someone else in.

“It’s tough, I know it’s not a nice feeling for a driver, it’s horrible, but for them the championship is important.”

Button has weighed in on Perez’s Red Bull prospects.

Perez endured a disastrous outing at Silverstone as a spin into the gravel in Q1 at Copse prompted a premature gamble to Intermediates in the race which backfired.

However, the six-time F1 race winner has remained adamant that he will not allow reports over his future to undermine his endeavour to get his season back on track.

“I know where I am in terms of contract and that sort of thing,” Perez addressed. “I cannot let it be a distraction.

“I need to focus on the next two weekends, which are the priority, and together as a team, to get out of this difficult period.”

But Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who was supportive towards his driver during his dip last season, has admitted that Perez’s low-scoring streak is “unsustainable”.

Although McLaren squandered another chance to win a race last weekend, Perez’s ongoing absence at the front still saw the Woking-based squad outscore Red Bull.

“We have to be scoring points in that car and he knows that,” Horner added.

“He knows his role and his target and so nobody is more eager than Checo to get back and find his form again.”

Ex-Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button has cautioned Lando Norris he could end up in a possible “spiral” should he continue to criticise his own performances.

Norris seemed on course to win the British Grand Prix last weekend as he led the race, but pitting one lap too late upon the crossover to slicks saw McLaren lose out.

Lewis Hamilton undercut his compatriot to take a record ninth Silverstone triumph, while troubles on the Soft compound saw Norris also slip behind Max Verstappen.

But while he picked up his seventh podium this season, Norris lamented McLaren “throwing away” another chance to add to his maiden win in Miami earlier this term.

“We still had a weekend where we’ve clearly been the quickest,” Norris reflected.

“We’ve always been there or thereabouts, but never the car, and I think we need to keep working as a team.

“I need to keep working on my own stuff, and just try and put it together because there are still so many positives.

“There are so many good things and so many things in place, but it is frustrating when a few times this season we’ve thrown away something that should have been ours.

I’ve heard that a lot lately, so I hate saying it again. But yeah, I mean, so many things were going well. We threw it away in the final stop.

“So one lap, but also I don’t think it was a lap. I think even if I boxed on the perfect lap, our decision to go on to the Softs was the wrong one.

“I think Lewis still would have won no matter what. So two calls from our side cost us everything, so, especially here, pretty disappointing.”

Button has warned Norris that his negative reaction could impact his driving.

McLaren has retained a quicker car than Red Bull in several races this season, but Verstappen has managed to extend his points lead as his main rival has slipped up.

The Woking-based squad committed a strategic error in Canada to lose Norris the lead, while the one-time F1 race winner rued a sluggish start that cost him in Spain.

With Norris again cutting a despondent figure as a win on home soil escaped his grasp, Button has warned the Briton that negative emotions could impact his driving.

“Lando needs to be a little bit careful with his emotions,” Button reflected on Sky Sports F1.

“He is putting himself down massively at the last race, this race, it can quite easily spiral out of control.

“We know how important it is to have your head in the right place. He is so talented that I don’t want him to be too down on himself so that he is not back up there at the next race.

“You also don’t want to show your competitors that you’re that down. That’s a weakness that you don’t want to show.

“It’s lovely that he’s open with his emotions and it’s great for us viewers.

“But I’m just thinking of the competitive side of things. He shouldn’t be so down on himself.”

2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button has questioned how the atmosphere will be at Mercedes this year following Lewis Hamilton’s decision to move to Ferrari in 2025.

It was announced on Thursday that Hamilton had activated a break clause in his current Mercedes deal to secure a switch to Ferrari on a multi-year agreement from next season.

Hamilton’s entire F1 career to this point has been powered by Mercedes and he has rewritten the record books since moving to the manufacturer’s works team back in 2013.

But amid the German outfit’s struggles since F1’s regulations were overhauled in 2022, the Briton has chosen to bring an end to that partnership and embark on a new chapter in his career with F1’s most successful team.

Button, who partnered Hamilton at McLaren between 2010 and 2012, believes his former team-mate’s bombshell transfer will continue to drive up the sport’s exponential growth.

“Surprised? Yeah. This is massive for the sport,” Button told Sky F1. “If Lewis stayed at Mercedes… if they won races or didn’t win races, it would have been good, but having this shift to Ferrari is massive.

“I think it’s great for the sport, everyone is going to have their eyes on Formula 1, especially Ferrari and Lewis. But also how he does up against Charles Leclerc, who has the contract so I’m guessing he’s the one that’s going to be alongside Lewis at Ferrari.

“It’s a big deal making this change in your career when you’ve been in one team for so long, to suddenly jump into somebody else’s team; it’s tough, so fair play to Lewis.”

Hamilton’s decision arrives only less than a year after he claimed he wanted to emulate the late Stirling Moss by retaining his affiliation with Mercedes until his “last days”.

Despite the German marque’s failure to deliver him a competitive car in F1’s latest ground effect era, Hamilton penned a two-year extension with the team last August.

Button believes that Hamilton’s rationale emanates from wanting to take on a new challenge at the twilight of his career, having accomplished everything with Mercedes.

“I think obviously 12 years at Mercedes is longer than most people ever spend in Formula 1, so to spend it with one team and achieve what they have, maybe he also wanted something different, to spice it up a little bit,” Button reasoned.

“We all get to that point in our career where it’s like, ‘you know what, I’ve done what I set out to achieve’ and you choose to retire. Whereas he’s gone the other route and gone, ‘you know what, I feel like I need a change, I’m going to go to Ferrari’.

“It’s a big deal and I cannot wait to see how he goes in the Ferrari.”

Lewis Hamilton (GBR) Mercedes AMG F1 with Jenson Button (GBR) Sky Sports F1 Presenter / Williams Racing Senior Advisor in parc ferme. 18.06.2023. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 9, Canadian Grand Prix, Montreal, Canada, Race Day.

However, Button believes the timing could prove to be an awkward one for both parties to deal with as Hamilton bids to end his Mercedes venture on a positive note in 2024.

“The weird thing is that it’s quite an early call to mention it this early on,” he continued. But it’s a year before he’ll be stepping into the Ferrari, so how is that atmosphere going to be at Mercedes.”

Pressed on how he and the team will deal with that transition, Button added: “It’s not easy, what do they hold back from Lewis?

“He knows the ins and outs of this team very well anyway, but when they get down to the nitty gritty are there going to be certain things they hold back from Lewis? Possibly.

“And for George [Russell], he’s got to start thinking about a new team-mate again. Is it going to be someone like his old karting rival Alex Albon or is it going to be Fernando Alonso? The guy that just doesn’t go away, he’s always there fighting for the top spots in the top teams.

“So who knows, and this definitely makes it an interesting year for us looking forward to 2025 already; we already have another year of Formula 1 to look forward to. But 2025, this is proper exciting.”

Button has also applauded the bravery of Hamilton to leave his comfort zone in favour of an Italian-centric environment which will present cultural differences that Leclerc has the advantage of being accustomed to.

“For Lewis, this is a brave move and a lot of respect to him,” he said. “He’s not just going to another team, he’s going to Ferrari.

“He’s going to a team where they speak Italian, a language he doesn’t know, a language that Charles does know very well. This is a biggie, so I’m excited for this and it’s great for F1.”

But despite having turned 39 ahead of the upcoming season, Button thinks Hamilton is operating at his peak level and is relishing the battle that he’ll have against Leclerc.

“I look forward to seeing Lewis and I think Lewis is in a place where he’s got a lot of confidence at the moment in himself,” he assessed.

“I think he’s driving at his best. And if he can carry that over to Ferrari, we’re looking forward to a great fight between him and Charles.

2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button believes Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are the combination best placed to end Red Bull’s recent dominance in 2024.

Despite rising one place to second in the Constructors’ standings last year, Mercedes trailed a sizeable 454 points behind Red Bull, who were victorious in 21 out of 22 races.

The German marque’s decision to retain the ‘zeropod’ solution at the start of 2023 backfired and resigned it to ending an F1 season winless for the first time since 2011.

But with Mercedes entering 2024 with a revised car concept, Button asserts that the Brackley squad’s past successes can’t be forgotten as it bids to rival Red Bull this year.

When asked on Sky Sports F1 which team is most likely to challenge Red Bull, Button elected to overlook the likes of Ferrari and ex-team McLaren in favour of Mercedes.

“When you look at the last 10 years in the sport, it’s Mercedes and Red Bull, so it would be Mercedes,” the Briton explained.

“I would love to say Ferrari, I would love to have them in the mix. You could say they were the closest competitor especially towards the end of the season, but I think Mercedes will have a good improvement. Whether it’s enough, I don’t know.”

Amid Mercedes’ struggles under this regulation cycle, Hamilton has not added to his record total of 103 victories since prevailing in Saudi Arabia in December 2021.

However, Button, who partnered the seven-time champion between 2010-12, is convinced that Hamilton is stronger than he’s ever been despite his protracted win drought.

“When you’ve won for so many years and then suddenly that’s taken away from you, it can work in two different ways,” he noted.

“One, you are just like: ‘Well, there’s no point anymore, I want to retire, I’ve been at the peak for so long and now I’ve not won a race in two years.’

“But also it can make you more hungry to get back to that, and Lewis is in that position right now I think.

“Lewis is as good as ever I would say in terms of his outright speed, but also now he seems much more comfortable in himself and confident in his ability, so he makes fewer mistakes.

“So he’s even better now than he was five or six years ago. That’s tough [for his opponents].

“If he gets a car that’s competitive enough to fight for victories, when someone’s that strong and that confident in themselves it’s difficult to beat, as you can see with Max Verstappen right now.”

Jenson Button has compared his new FIA WEC employer JOTA Sport to the Brawn GP outfit that guided him to the Formula 1 World Championship in 2009.

Button was announced as the third driver of JOTA’s #38 Porsche 963 Hypercar on Friday – with the 2024 FIA WEC season set to be his first full championship of competition since his unsuccessful title defence in the 2019 Super GT series.

The 2009 Formula 1 Champion took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the exciting announcement and likened the customer JOTA team to Ross Brawn’s eponymous phoenix Formula 1 team.

“It’s an out-and-out race team and that’s what I love about the team,” Button told his Instagram followers of JOTA.

“I really do think they can take it to the big teams, to the manufacturers.

“It kind of reminds me of a season back in 2009 which was pretty good.”

2009, of course, was the year of Brawn GP, the team born out of the ashes of Honda’s hasty exit from F1 at the end of 2008 amid an international financial crisis.

Team Principal Ross Brawn spearheaded efforts to get Brawn onto the grid and the team capitalised on a radically revised set of technical regulations via its innovative double diffuser concept to emerge as the strongest competitor at the start of the ’09 season, with Button winning six of the first seven races en route to a memorable title for both him and the team.

Brawn GP’s story is a remarkable piece of F1 history that is currently being revisited in a documentary mini-series fronted by Hollywood superstar Keanu Reeves over on Disney+.

Following the unlikely triumph in 2009. Brawn was bought by Mercedes and the Brackley-based team went on to win seven Drivers’ and eight Constructors’ titles between 2014 and 2021.

JOTA, who led for a portion of this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans with its customer Porsche 963 entry, has a similarly impressive record of success as a privateer team.

As Button said in his video on Instagram, JOTA is the most successful privateer entry in the history of the FIA WEC series and at the centrepiece race at Le Mans.

“There’s a lot to do before the first race, a couple of tests,” added Button.

“It’s a competitive year, so I look forward to being ready for the first race in Qatar at the start of March.”

2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button is optimistic that Red Bull won’t dominate the sport again next season, predicting that an “upset” could be on the cards.

Having managed to win 10 of the last 11 races in 2022, Red Bull has since emerged victorious in every grand prix bar one this season with only two rounds now remaining.

With its closest rivals from last year – Ferrari and Mercedes – recovering from opening the year with concepts that had hit a development ceiling, both Aston Martin and McLaren have capitalised to also materialise as one of Red Bull’s nearest contenders.

But while Max Verstappen has claimed a record-breaking 17 wins – including 10 in a row – Sergio Perez has only recorded one podium finish since the summer break.

Button believes the huge disparity between the two Red Bull team-mates across the second half of the campaign demonstrates the chasing pack is gradually closing in.

Although the Briton accepts that a period of stability in the regulations makes it tougher to catch Red Bull, he has been impressed by McLaren and Mercedes’ progress this year.

Asked if the competition must replicate the type of innovation that saw Brawn steal a march on its rivals in 2009, Button told Sky Sports News: “Well, you don’t have the rule changes that we were lucky enough to have. I also just think the sport is even more competitive now. You know, there are so many big teams fighting at the front and one tiny slip-up and you’re the fourth-best team.

“So to catch Red Bull’s difficult, but they’re getting closer. I mean, Brazil wasn’t a great example, but this second part of the season you’ve seen teams like McLaren, Mercedes, both fighting very closely with the Red Bulls.

“Max has had that little advantage, but his team-mate hasn’t, so we could have an upset next year.

“I don’t think it’s going to be all Red Bull’s way. This year was an exceptional year for that team, and I don’t feel it will be the same next year, which is what the sport needs. We need a little bit of a mix up.”

In Brazil McLaren’s Lando Norris beat Verstappen to pole position for the Sprint and began the restart early in Sunday’s race alongside the Dutchman on the front row.

Although Norris was able to closely track Verstappen through the opening laps and lined up a move on Lap 7, Verstappen coasted away towards a comfortable win.

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella believes the main performance differentiator now separating the side and Red Bull is related to the latter’s evident edge on tyre degradation.

“I think the difference is mainly in terms of lap time on used tyres,” Stella explained in Brazil. “We have seen that in new tyres, we can fight for position.

“But as soon as the tyres degrade, then it would appear like Max, Red Bull, they can just have less degradation. The tyres were degrading maybe one-tenth every two laps.

“It’s a significant amount of degradation and if you can limit that, after 10 laps in a stint, this is tenths of a second, so I think that’s where they are superior at the moment.”
