Former Formula 1 racer Giancarlo Fisichella will compete on the support package at next weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, alongside ex-rival Rubens Barrichello.
Barrichello, the most experienced driver in Formula 1 history, made an appearance in the single-seater S5000 series last year, and has already signed up for its event in Melbourne.
Fisichella, winner of the 2005 Australian Grand Prix – in which Barrichello placed second – has now signed up for the opening round of this year’s S5000 championship.
“I am very excited about coming back to a city and a street circuit which mean so much to me,” Fisichella said.
“My Grand Prix win will stay in my heart forever as well as the warmth of the many Australian fans who come every year to Melbourne for a great motorsport spectacle.
“It is also a full comeback to an open wheeler for me, after ten solid years of GT racing and for this I can’t wait until I am going to be behind the wheel of an S5000.”
Fisichella raced in Formula 1 between 1996 and 2009, competing for Minardi, Jordan, Benetton/Renault, Force India and Ferrari.
He has remained active in sportscar competition since the conclusion of his Formula 1 career, taking GT class victories at Le Mans in 2012 and 2014.
