Horner: 23 races ‘on the limit of human tolerance’

Christian Horner (GBR) Red Bull Racing Team Principal in the FIA Press Conference. Russian Grand Prix, Friday 25th September 2020. Sochi Autodrom, Sochi, Russia.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says a 23-race calendar is “on the limit of human tolerance” in the wake of next year’s Formula 1 calendar being released.

Formula 1 is currently planning for a 2021 season that features 23 rounds, with the addition of Saudi Arabia and return of the Netherlands.

The fourth round, scheduled for late April, currently does not have a location following the absence of the Vietnam round.

Formula 1 has not yet had a schedule with more than 21 rounds though this year’s calendar was due to feature 22 events prior to the Covid-19 pandemic wrecking proceedings.

“There has been lots made of the 23 races on next year’s calendar as we are seeing the demand for F1 races increase,” said Horner.

“But when you look at the races this season, where we have 17 races between July and the end of the season, it has been pretty intense.

“So looking at 23 races over a season compared to what we have done this year in such a short space of time, it looks a lot more straightforward.

“But it is a lot, and it will be demanding. Yes, there is a bit less testing so that compensates fractionally, but it will be a challenge for all team members.

“Less so for the drivers as they fly in and out slightly later than the team, but a lot for everyone else.

“There are some great races planned, but of course it is on the limit of human tolerance.”

It is understood that one three-day test, likely to be held in Bahrain, will take place prior to the planned season-opener in Australia.
