James Vowles has revealed the multi-faceted impact Carlos Sainz has had at Williams

Williams boss James Vowles has been able to highlight several positive impacts new Formula 1 hire Carlos Sainz has had on the team.

Sainz revealed in the aftermath of the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix that he signed a multi-year deal with Williams, ending months of speculation over his future after Ferrari named Lewis Hamilton as his 2025 replacement before last year’s campaign had even begun.

The Spaniard was able to get his first running in a Williams car in December, driving the FW46 in the post-season test at Abu Dhabi and has since been busy getting integrated with the team at its Grove headquarters.

Sainz was also handed the honour of running the first laps in the FW47 as Williams launched its 2025 campaign at Silverstone on Friday.

Vowles, speaking to select media including Motorsport Week at Williams’ launch, was able to point to several benefits of having Sainz in blue.

“[He has] a really good way of working with Alex [Albon], especially when we look at control systems, so differentials, brake maps, etc,” Vowles began.

Vowles continued by adding the experience of Sainz over the youthful exuberance of 2024 super-sub Franco Colapinto also has its benefits.

“[Sainz] brings a whole new dimension where Franco, for all of his skill in the car, obviously we were almost teaching him along the way what the control systems do.

“We now have an expert in it that has won races, and that’s really brought the team upwards.

“Same with starts. Think of all the ancillary items, so not even driving the car. I can just see a dimensional change in how we’re performing from where we were before to where we are today.”

Sainz’s Abu Dhabi test brought ‘good news’

Sainz jumped from a race-winning Ferrari to a Williams machine capable of a handful of points in just a day.

Vowles spoke of how important it was to get the Spaniard’s comparison and was buoyed by knowledge Williams is heading in the right direction in terms of development.

“It was incredibly useful and powerful having him testing with us in Abu Dhabi because we were able to understand where our weaknesses lie relative to a car he’d driven just a few days before but had winning potential, and more importantly, make sure that the direction of travel that we’re in, which I’m pleased to say is correct, was on the right pathway,” Vowles explained.

“Carlos, when he tested in Abu Dhabi, gave us very instantaneous, correct feedback on all the areas we have to improve on.

“The good news is it’s aligned with ours, and even more good news is there are areas where we have active mechanisms in place to rectify.”

The knowledge of Ferrari’s prowess carried into Williams’ Friday launch and Vowles said “What [Sainz has] done this morning is, again, he knows what excellence looks like.

“He was in race-winning categories last year, in a car that was a benchmark for the whole of the year, so he brings that with him.

“But what he’s very good and able to do is digest that in a way that is clear and simple, so we don’t get lost, and it’s directed.”

The emotional impact Sainz has had at Williams

Beyond technical aspects, the arrival of a multiple-times GP winner at Williams has had a profound emotional impact at Williams.

Vowles said the mere presence of the Spaniard has brought with it a wave of positivity at Grove, one that Alex Albon has contributed to in spades as well.

“I see an organisation around me that is smiling, happy, whose shoulders are lifted because they can see a pathway forward towards success, and that very much has Carlos’s and Alex’s names written all over it,” Vowles said.

“This will not be successful if any one individual is above the team, that’s whether it’s myself, Carlos or Alex.

“It needs all three of us, and then a thousand individuals pointing the right way with the sole goal of this team becoming championship contenders.

“And that means along the journey, there’s going to be one driver or one individual that is doing worse one weekend or the other, they’re aware of that, and we’ve already had that very direct chat about it.

“They’re very much in that mindset, furthermore, they came up with suggestions and ideas of how actually we can make this better.

“They’re alive with it, they know where they are, they know where we’re going, and the bigger goal is how to move the team forward.”

Alex Albon isn't feeling the pressure having Carlos Sainz as his new Williams team-mate

Alex Albon has dismissed that Carlos Sainz’s arrival at Williams has ramped up the pressure on him in Formula 1, citing that he is relishing the “great challenge” ahead.

Albon has rebuilt his reputation at Williams since his torrid time paired with Max Verstappen at Red Bull which resigned him to spending a season on the sidelines in 2021.

The Anglo-Thai driver has batted aside Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeant with ease, while he also held a visible measure over Franco Colapinto in his interim spell.

However, Albon is poised to receive his biggest test since partnering Verstappen at Red Bull in 2025 as four-time race winner Carlos Sainz will be in the opposite garage.

Sainz became recognised as one of the best drivers in the sport during his time at Ferrari, helping the team to almost win the Constructors’ Championship last time out.

Indeed, Williams boss James Vowles, who was integral to Sainz turning down interest elsewhere, has counted the Spaniard among the top four on the current F1 grid.

Asked whether there was additional pressure on him to beat Sainz to cement his status, Albon told media including Motorsport Week at the launch of the Williams FW47: “No, if I’m honest, no.

“Maybe I look at it differently to other people but I see it as the better my teammate, the better that I can go up against someone who’s got a big reputation, who’s just come from a very strong year. I think I said it before but possibly his best year in Formula 1 last year.

“I think that’s a great challenge to have but also a positive outlook for me. I believe in myself and I’m happy to go up against anyone.”

Albon and Sainz pulling in the same direction at Williams

Sainz has established a reputation as being a driver who boasts a relentless work ethic and meticulous attention to detail, assets which have helped his past teams improve.

Albon believes such qualities align with his own approach and values, which he thinks will have a positive impact on Williams as the team strives to climb the pecking order.

Pressed on whether he has seen behind the scenes the reasons why Sainz is rated so highly, Albon answered: “Yes, I have.

“I think that he’s a bit of a, you could call it like a thinking driver. I would put myself in the same box in that sense.

“I think it’s good.  It’s a good base to work from. I think we work well with each other. Obviously, we haven’t driven that much. We did a little short test in Barcelona, but even the work we do in the simulator, it’s all going in the same direction.

“He’s clearly bringing a lot of information from Ferrari, different ways of working and different ways to optimise their package.

“Obviously, it’s different to Williams, but it’s very interesting, not just for the team, but for myself as well.”

Carlos Sainz was the first out on track in the new Williams FW47

Carlos Sainz has given his reaction to his first outing in the Williams FW47 ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Williams hosted a special livestream broadcast of its 2025 season launch at Silverstone on Friday.

The FW47, clad in a special livery celebrating new title partner Atlassian, left the garage for the first time with new signing Sainz at the wheel on Friday morning.

A short installation run was carried out and Sainz swiftly returned to the garage and his first assessment of the Williams FW47 was a positive one.

“I can tell you everything went fine which is good news,” Sainz said in an interview with 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button as he hopped out of the Williams FW47.

“An install lap of a newly born car is always a bit tricky but everything worked as it should and now we’re ready to get into the run plan.

“Now, first I need to give the feedback to the engineers on the two or three things that I felt could be improved, the feeling inside the cockpit and everything I want to talk to them about.

“Then we will get the car ready to run on slicks and probably start pushing it little by little.”

Short offseason for Sainz amid Williams switch

Sainz has joined Williams on a multi-year deal after his four-season tenure at Ferrari came to an end at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Swapping Maranello for Grove is a big change for the Spaniard and he admitted his off-season was shorter as a result.

“It’s been a shorter break, but also when you change teams that break becomes even shorter because you have to go back to work earlier,” he said.

“There’s a lot of catch-up you need to do and I’ve been spending quite a bit of time here in the UK getting up to speed with my new team.”

Williams has kicked off its 2025 Formula 1 season with the launch of the FW47 at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix.

The FW47 was presented via a live stream event in a special one-off livery celebrating the team’s new title partnership with Atlassian and welcoming recently signed sponsor Santander ahead of the true colour scheme being unveiled at the F1 75 Live event at London’s O2 Arena on February 18.

Launching the FW47 at Silverstone, Williams will take its new steed out on track for filming activities, allowing Alex Albon and new signing Carlos Sainz to get their first taste behind the wheel.

With a new title partner and a GP-winning driver in his stable, Williams Team Principal James Vowles is looking forward to the future.

“This is by far nothing, anything close to it, the biggest partnership we’ve ever had,” Vowles said.

“It’s probably one of the biggest in sports.

“It’s about being a challenger to other brands and other systems and other dynamics. And from the first conversations we had with Atlassian, it was very clear that how we want to work with each other is how we work internally at the same time.

“So, there was just a jelling from the outset.

“But it’s huge for us. I think what it demonstrates, we have two of the best drivers.

“We have some of the best individuals as a part of us. We have individuals that know the journey we’re on. They’re all over the car. They’re a part of it.

“But they’re partners. They’re not sponsors. They’re partners that want to be a part of what we’re doing.”

Atlassian ‘excited’ to launch FW47 with Williams

Atlassian CEO and Co-Founder Mike Cannon-Brookes was also part of the live stream presentation of the FW47.

“Whilst Sir Frank Williams used his earnings as a grocery salesman to build his dream, we started ours with $10,000 and a credit card,” he said.

“As the first global technology company to scale from Australia, we know what it’s like to be the underdog.

“We also know what it’s like to have passion, drive, and belief that you’re building something great.

“This team has been through a remarkable transformation, and I believe Atlassian Williams Racing has all the foundations for renewed greatness.

“I couldn’t be prouder that Atlassian is part of this journey as their technology and title partner.

Jean Todt is unsure whether Lewis Hamilton over Carlos Sainz improves the Ferrari lineup

Former FIA President and Ferrari boss Jean Todt is unsure whether Lewis Hamilton over Carlos Sainz represents a level-up for the Italian Formula 1 giant.

Seven-time champion Hamilton replaces Sainz at Ferrari, with the Spaniard moving to Williams after four seasons with the Scuderia.

Charles Leclerc believes Hamilton’s championship-winning pedigree will be a benefit to Ferrari, telling RacingNews365 “With how much success Lewis has had, it’s going to be incredibly interesting to hear him and see how he used to work with other very successful teams.

“Whether he was with Mercedes and McLaren before, he won championships with both,” Leclerc added.

“For sure, it will pull us upward, help us learn and see different perspectives in our ways of working.”

Ferrari is looking to end its title drought with 17 seasons having passed since Kimi Raikkonen’s success in 2007.

Todt was Team Principal at Ferrari from 1993 through 2004 and CEO for four years after that masterminded a turnaround at the Scuderia as Michael Schumacher ended a Drivers’ title drought in 2000 that harked back to Jody Scheckter’s 1979 triumph.

The Frenchman believes that Ferrari is close to tasting such success once again, but isn’t sure whether it’s the team’s drivers that are the key to making that step.

“What is Ferrari missing to win? Little, very little. Even in the past, they came very close,” he told Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

“Even the line-up with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz was a good pairing; they certainly didn’t lose because of the drivers.

“Obviously, even with Hamilton the line-up remains top-level,” he added.

“Will it be better than the previous one? I have no idea, we’ll have to see the level of the car.”

Jean Todt believes Lewis Hamilton's arrival at Ferrari will motivate Charles Leclerc
Jean Todt believes Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari will motivate Charles Leclerc

True enough, Sainz added two Grand Prix wins to Leclerc’s three in 2024 and the duo combined for 652 points, just 14 behind Constructors’ Champions McLaren despite having a mid-season slump due to poorly optimised upgrades.

But adding Hamilton’s pedigree to Leclerc’s prowess is arguably, on paper the strongest line-up on the F1 grid and could well provide an edge if Ferrari and McLaren are on par in terms of car development.

Hamilton will motivate Leclerc – Todt

A lot of the talk of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has been how he’ll stack up against Leclerc.

2024 was a rollercoaster of a season for F1’s joint-record title-winner.

Despite returning to winning ways on two occasions, Hamilton was comprehensively out-qualified by Mercedes team-mate George Russell.

That is something Hamilton will need to work on to keep up with Leclerc, but how will the Monegasque driver react to having Hamilton as a team-mate?

Leclerc has been a long-standing member of the Ferrari family, as an academy driver for the Scuderia before joining the team in F1 in 2019.

Todt believes that Leclerc will be motivated by Hamilton’s arrival, similar to how Russell rose to the occasion to challenge the veteran during their three years together at Mercedes.

“I don’t think [Leclerc] will be affected by Hamilton,” Todt said.

“For Charles, it could be an opportunity to be even more motivated, much like what happened with George Russell at Mercedes.”

Carlos Sainz has made a start on life with Williams

Carlos Sainz has made the best possible start to his Williams Formula 1 debut, topping the morning session of the post-season Abu Dhabi test.

Sainz got his first taste of the Williams FW46 on Monday as he participated in a filming day for the Grove-based F1 outfit at the Yas Marina Circuit.

He was able to complete seven laps during his initial sampling of the FW46, setting a fastest time of 1:26.484s.

The Spaniard already said post-race on Sunday that in his final laps for Ferrari, finishing second in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he was trying to remember as much information as possible to help his new employer.

“I’m not going to lie, my last laps, as much as I was pushing like hell for this team and trying to, I was already starting to feel things in the car and trying to say, ‘remember how this feels,'” he said in the post-race press conference.

“Because tomorrow and Tuesday I need to remember, why is this car quick in this corner and why does it feel good?”

Wearing a white race suit and overalls on Tuesday morning, just as he did throughout Monday’s running, Sainz ensured he was amongst the first out of the pitlane.

The Spaniard clocked 60 laps of Yas Marina in the morning segment of the post-season test, going quickest with a time of 1:24.435s.

Sainz joined by Luke Browning at in Abu Dhabi test

Sainz is joined in post-season testing duties by Williams Academy Driver Luke Browning.

Browning, who finished third in this year’s FIA F3 Championship and will fight for the F2 championship next year with Hitech, got his first taste of the FW46 in FP1 of the Abu Dhabi GP.

The 22-year-old also got mileage in the morning session of Tuesday’s test, going ninth fastest with a 1:25.409s time.

As a rookie, Browning is allocated the 2024 specification of Pirelli tyres for the test and will be able to use the C3, C4 and C5 compounds.

Unlike in previous years, teams are allowed to run two cars, meaning Sainz won’t need to share with Browning.

As a race driver, the Spaniard is using 10 sets of the new 2025 Pirelli tyres: one C2, three each of the C3 and C4, two C5 and one of the new ultra-soft C6.

Carlos Sainz wants to bring Williams back to the front of F1

Immediately after his final race for Ferrari came to a close, Sainz set out his target for 2025 and beyond in the parc ferme interviews.

“My target is from next year onwards, focus together with Williams to get back to where we belong together.”

The Spaniard has plenty of work to do with Williams finishing ninth in the 2024 Constructors’ standings with 17 points.

Sainz is on a multi-year deal with the Grove-based outfit and will partner Alex Albon in 2025, ’26 and beyond.

Williams Team Principal James Vowles has been boastful of his new lineup.

The Williams boss has gone on record saying: “In ’25, I think we will have the best driver line-up on the grid.”

Carlos Sainz said the timing of his Qatar GP puncture couldn't have been worse for Ferrari

Carlos Sainz said he and Ferrari “couldn’t have got it worse” with the timing of his puncture during the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix.

Shortly after Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas struck a loose wing mirror on the approach to Turn 1 at the Lusail International Circuit, both Sainz and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton were struck by punctures.

The cause of the punctures, be it debris or strenuous tyre wear at the high-speed Qatar venue is undetermined, but the impact was profound, especially for Sainz.

Sainz rued the timing of his puncture, coming just as he started a lap and forcing him to complete a tour of 5.419km circuit with a hampered Ferrari.

“I think we couldn’t have got it worse, you know, we had a puncture pretty much coming out of the last corner or around the last sector, then it meant I needed to do a full lap on a punctured tyre, using a lot of race time, then we had a slow pit stop during that slow puncture, and then as soon as I came out of the pits they put the Safety Car out,” Sainz said as he described the perfect storm of unfortunate events.

“So everyone can take their stop, and I’ve lost a lot of time with the puncture and the pit stop under racing conditions, and then a Safety Car comes out exactly while I’m exiting the pit, so couldn’t have been any worse.”

Despite the disappointing setback, Sainz was able to take solace that he recovered to his starting position, sixth, by the time the chequered flag fell in Qatar.

“I started P6, I finished P6 with everything that happened, and I had to race probably with some damage in the car for the rest of the race, Sainz said.

“Yeah, a bit of a nightmare day, and bringing home a P6 maybe is not as terrible as it now feels, but yeah, at least the other car could get maximum points available for Charles [Leclerc, P2], and I think it’s damage limitation with everything that happened.”

Ferrari puncture caused by ‘perfect storm,’ says Carlos Sainz

Sainz believed several factors at play led to his disastrous puncture, saying “it was a bit of a perfect storm.

“I think everyone was running very low on the front left tyre in terms of tread, I think no one had much tread left, this exposes obviously the tyre and the carcass to a puncture, and then the sharp kerbs, the gravel on the track, the debris, could have been any of them the cause of the puncture, we will never know.

“I just know that I got the worst of it because I had to do a full lap punctured, plus a slow pit stop, plus the damage, plus a Safety Car when I came out of the pit.”

Frederic Vasseur put Sainz's Qatar puncture down to debris on track

Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur, meanwhile, decreed that “for sure, tyre wear is not helping, but there is not the puncture, it is the debris.”

Vasseur even admitted that “the plan was to pit even later on. On one car, we pitted because of the puncture. On the other one, that was the safety car. But the initial plan was to pit even later than this.”

Safety Car took ‘more than too long’ to appear in Qatar GP

A debated factor in the Qatar GP was the delayed Safety Car intervention following the loose wing mirror that was flung clear from Alex Albon’s Williams on Lap 30.

For several laps the situation was managed by double waved yellow flags and the Safety Car was only called after Bottas struck the mirror and Sainz and Hamiltons uffured punctures.

Sainz was frustrated by this, especially since his ordeal was over by the time the Safety Car was called.

“[It took] more than too long, I wish it could have come out while I was having a puncture so no one could overtake me, or no one could profit from the Safety Car, or we could all profit from the Safety Car given that two cars [had punctures],” Sainz said.

“That lap that I did on a punctured car, clearly there was something going on and I had to do a full lap and a very slow pit stop before the Safety Car came out, which is the most frustrating part of it.”

Charles Leclerc had to fight his Ferrari as he qualified fourth in Mexico

As the 2024 Formula 1 season approaches its final stages, the battle for the Drivers’ Championship has been intensifying. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, currently sits third in the standings with 291 points, trailing leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who has amassed 362 points, and McLaren’s Lando Norris, who holds 315 points.

With only three races remaining, Ferrari fans can’t help but wonder, does Leclerc still have a realistic chance of clinching the 2024 championship?

What the sportsbooks think

For fans and bettors alike, the excitement of the championship race extends beyond the track. Offshore sportsbooks have become increasingly popular for wagering on a variety of sports, including Formula 1. According to sports betting expert Adam Haynes, these platforms often offer competitive odds, faster pay outs, and a broader range of betting markets compared to traditional bookmakers. Given the sport’s worldwide fan base, many of them are renowned for their extensive F1 betting options and prompt transaction processing (source: https://bestoffshoresportsbooks.org/).

As of November 1, 2024, the odds for the Drivers’ Championship reflect the current standings:

  • Max Verstappen: 1/2 (-200)
  • Lando Norris: 3/1 (+300)
  • Charles Leclerc: 10/1 (+1000)

These odds indicate that while Verstappen remains the favourite, Leclerc is still in contention, albeit as an underdog. However, while this reflects the most likely outcome, for many of the Tifosi, the dream is still alive given that it’s at least still mathematically possible.

Charles Leclerc has opened up on Ferrari’s title hopes

Leclerc’s season has been marked by consistent podium finishes and two race victories. However, a few missed opportunities and mechanical issues have hindered his ability to close the gap to Verstappen. The remaining races in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi present both challenges and opportunities.

Historically, Leclerc has performed well at circuits like Las Vegas and Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi. To overtake Verstappen, Leclerc would need to secure multiple race wins and rely on his rivals encountering misfortunes. Given the current points deficit, even a flawless performance may not suffice without external factors influencing the outcomes.

Ferrari’s strategic decisions and car reliability will play crucial roles in Leclerc’s pursuit of the title. The team must ensure optimal performance and avoid errors that could cost valuable points. Additionally, team orders and support from teammate Carlos Sainz could be pivotal in challenging Red Bull’s dominance.

How things look for Sainz, Norris, and Hamilton

Carlos Sainz has shown impressive consistency throughout the 2024 season, becoming a valuable asset to Ferrari and, potentially, a key factor in Charles Leclerc’s championship ambitions. While Leclerc remains Ferrari’s primary contender for the title, Sainz has delivered podium finishes in several recent races, amassing crucial points for Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship

Sainz’s strong performances in the last few races have underscored his ability to adapt to different track conditions and work with the team’s strategy, which could become essential as the season draws to a close. His recent win in Mexico not only bolstered his standing but also demonstrated Ferrari’s improved pace.

If Leclerc has any realistic shot at catching Verstappen, he’ll likely need support from his teammate, and Sainz seems willing to play a team role where needed. Although Sainz himself is mathematically out of contention for the Drivers’ Championship, his dedication to Ferrari’s objectives has shown he could assist Leclerc in gaining a competitive edge.

Lando Norris has been a standout performer this season, placing him as the closest challenger to Verstappen’s dominance. Norris’s consistency has been remarkable, with multiple podiums and three race wins in 2024, including his recent victory at the United States Grand Prix, which narrowed the points gap to Verstappen.

McLaren’s focus on car development has paid off, allowing Norris to extract maximum performance from each race weekend. His ability to qualify high and convert those starting positions into podium finishes has kept him firmly in the title race as he and Verstappen have had some epic duels on the track already.

Norris’s momentum positions him as a realistic threat to Verstappen’s title bid, especially given McLaren’s recent upgrades that have boosted performance on high-speed tracks. With just a few points between him and the top, he could feasibly secure the championship if Verstappen encountered any setbacks in the final races.

Carlos Sainz was on fire all weekend at the Mexico City GP

One of the most talked-about developments for the upcoming 2025 season is Lewis Hamilton’s much-anticipated move to Ferrari. After an illustrious career with Mercedes, Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari represents a new chapter. This marks a major opportunity for a rebound, not just for Hamilton but for Ferrari, which has struggled to reclaim championship glory since its last Constructors’ title in 2008.

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, has expressed his excitement about joining the legendary Italian team and hasn’t been shy this season to make his feelings about Max Verstappen known either. This high-profile move has sparked interest in Ferrari’s 2025 ambitions, as Hamilton’s experience and skill could help elevate the team’s competitiveness.

For Ferrari, Hamilton’s arrival brings invaluable expertise and an intense desire to add another title to his legacy. His insights into race strategy, car development, and leadership in the paddock will be essential for Ferrari, especially if they hope to contend with Red Bull and McLaren on a more consistent basis.
