2024 Monza Feature race

The FIA has revealed the identity of the 10 teams that will participate in the Formula 3 championship over the next three years as the feeder looks set to deliver more blockbuster racing.

F3 will once again have a 30-car grid from 2025 to 2027, with each team fielding three cars at all rounds, providing opportunities for younger drivers to impress.

9 of the 10 teams remain in the category, including Trident, following their Drivers’ Championship win with Leonardo Fornaroli and Prema, who once again took the Teams’ Championship.

A new name will arrive in the series next year, with DAMS making its debut, giving the team representation in F3 and F2 as it replaces outgoing Jenzer Motorsport.

In a statement, FIA Formula 3 CEO Bruno Michel highlighted the pedigree of the teams and wished Jenzer Motorsport well as it embarks on its new ventures next season.

“For the next three-year cycle, we have retained nine of our current teams. Their level of professionalism and expertise guarantee the best preparation for the young drivers who aspire to progress to the highest levels of motorsport.

“To complete the grid, we welcome DAMS to the list of selected teams. We know them very well from the FIA Formula 2 Championship. Their pedigree and level of performance make them the perfect addition to the F3 field,” he said.

“Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andreas Jenzer and everyone at Jenzer Motorsport for their commitment to Formula 3 since the beginning of the category. They have left their mark in the Championship, and I completely respect their decision to focus now on new challenges.” he concluded.

A new car for a new era

The first round of the new F3 season begins in March 2025, supporting the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, with a new Dallara car making its much-anticipated debut after its shakedown at Varano last month.

A new engine built by Mecachrome will also debut, with teams hoping for better reliability after various issues plagued the series in the last few seasons.

Richard Verschoor claimed his fourth FIA Formula 2 win and his first of the season after a chaotic Feature Race in Baku which left Gabriel Bortoleto the new championship leader.

The Dutchman converted his pole position into victory after a hectic race which as delayed by half-an-hour after a horrifying start-line crash, with Kush Maini’s stalled Invicta collecting Oliver Goethe’s MP and Pepe Marti’s Campos.

Victor Martins, who harried Verschoor for much of the race, finished second after a late Safety Car would halt his charge. Kimi Antonelli, in contention early-on in the race, would see his chances disappear after an incident with Zane Maloney, but would manage to finish third.

Bortoleto never looked like contending for victory, but did enough to secure a title lead with Isack Hadjar failing to score any points.

Sprint Race winner Joshua Durksen came home in fifth, with Paul Aron sixth and Luke Browning coming seventh in his first F2 Feature. Jak Crawford was eighth, with Dennis Hauger ninth, and Browning’s fellow debutant Christian Mansell in 10th.

HOW THE RACE UNFOLDED

At the start, Verschoor got away cleanly from pole but Maini stalled, leaving cars to dart quickly to avoid the stranded Invicta, but Goethe and Marti were left unsighted, careering into the Indian, firing a confetti of carbon fibre debris into the air. The red flag was immediately brought out, with a nervous wait to find out if all drivers were OK. Thankfully, all climbed out of their cars unscathed, with a shaken Marti taking a moment on the side of the track to gather his thoughts.

A delay of around half-an-hour would follow, with marshals clearing the carnage. The race would now be up against the clock in terms of the whole time, with around another 30 minutes remaining. Race control opted to order a rolling start procedure for the restart, with the laps reduced so the event would in effect become another sprint-style.

The rolling start would leave Verschoor in a precarious state of vulnerability, and would choose to bunch the pack up and wait until just before the line to put his foot down, catching-out Antonelli and holding his lead.

Martins was now swarming all over Antonelli’s Prema, with Browning taking Hauger for 11th, but the Norwegian immediately taking back the place, with Aron just ahead in 10th place. The Williams Academy man, in his first F2 race, was not looking intimidated, fighting Hauger until part of his front wing was lost after running out of room and tagging the wall.

At the start of lap two, Martins dived down the inside of Antonelli at T1 for second, with Verschoor opening-up a gap of eight tenths. Further back, Mansell was impressing in his first F2 Feature, sitting in seventh ahead of fellow debutant Mini.

With DRS now enabled, Martins set about closing the gap to Verschoor, and was now within range, closing the gap in the first sector, but the Trident would open up a gap in the second, but Martins was much faster in the final sector, giving him a slingshot into T1. Ducking out of the draught, the the Frenchman repeated his move on Antonelli, taking the lead.

Antonelli set the fastest lap so far, with Maloney also keeping tabs in fourth, with Bortoleto just behind. Mansell took Durken for sixth, as Browning, Crawford, Durksen all choosing to pit. Martins would follow a lap later with Verschoor and Antonelli also coming in, giving Maloney the lead. Verschoor would get the jump, with Martins the biggest loser, coming out behind Antonelli, effectively in third.

Maloney and Bortoleto would come in next, with Mini now taking a temporary lead. Maloney would get out ahead of Antonelli, but on cold tyres, he would be vulnerable to the Italian’s stern challenge, and got into T3, Maloney locked-up, leaving Antonelli with little space to turn into, and the two made contact. Maloney would be stranded half-way up the escape road, now in last, with Antonelli now in fifth.

Fittipaldi eventually pitted from his lead on lap 11, with Hadjar now finding himself at the front, with Verschoor in a net lead in second place, with Martins and Antonelli behind him. Hadjar would now pit with just nine minutes left, rejoining in 14th. Durksen, Aron and Browning would be benefit, the pair now fifth, sixth and seventh.

Verschoor, unsighted by TV cameras, appeared to have tagged the wall at some stage, the Trident seeming misaligned, but with five minutes remaining, he would have a 1.2 second lead from Martins.

Mini would set the fastest lap to date as Verschoor continued to keep his buffer, desperately needed to keep Martins out of his DRS range. Antonelli was now falling back from the front two, but new team-mate Mini was in the wall at T15, bringing out yellow flags at the second and third sectors, with the Safety Car deployed soon after. With only one-and-a-half minutes left, Verschoor’s victory was now secure.

Under the crawling pace of the Safety Car, Verschoor crossed the line to take his first win of the season, with Martins and Antonelli following close behind. Bortoleto coming home in fourth ensured he would now be leading the championship, taking it into Lusail in December.

Trident’s Richard Verschoor took pole position for the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race on Sunday after a frantic last lap qualifying battle after the session was halted by a bizarre red flag incident.

The Dutchman nabbed top spot with a time of 1:54.857 from Kimi Antonelli, who looked to be heading for P1.

Victor Martins will start in third, with Zane Maloney fourth, Kush Maini fifth and Gabriel Bortoleto sixth. Joshua Durksen qualified in seventh, with Jak Crawford ninth. Eighth and tenth will be occupied by debutants Gabriele Mini and Christian Mansell, with fellow first-timer Luke Browning also impressing in 11th.

This means Mansell will line-up for the Sprint Race, his first taste of racing action in the competition, in first.

Isack Hadjar set the early pace with a 1:57.423, but was quickly displaced by 10 others as the rubber began to be laid down and times tumbling. Verschoor would go top as the yellow flags briefly went out with Dennis Hauger spinning off in the second sector.

Drivers began to improve their times, with Verschoor bettering his time with a 1:55.655, with Martins not far behind, the Frenchman’s ART necessitating a repair job after suffering a front brake fire before the start of qualifying. Antonelli was sitting in third just under half-a-second adrift.

With drivers pitting ready for a second run, the business end of the session was curtailed by the red flag being brought out after an unusual incident, with Campos drivers of Pepe Marti and Hadjar locking-up and careering off into the barrier at the run-off at T1. The session was delayed for just under ten minutes whilst the barrier received necessary repair. Hadjar was placed under investigation for causing a red flag.

The session resumed with just over four laps remaining, giving drivers enough time for one more flying lap, leaving them without enough time to get their fresh tyres up to an optimum temperature.

Antonelli was then blistering, taking three tenths out of the fastest first sector, going six tenths quicker in the second. Maini went quickest, then Maloney, with Antonelli then going predictably fastest, but then Verschoor, quickest for much of the half-hour, took it off of him at the last by one one hundredth of a second, the change in driver order happening within a matter of seconds.

The session leaves title leader Hadjar in danger with Bortoleto and Maloney looking in better shape for the races ahead.

Christian Mansell and Luke Browning will make their FIA Formula 2 debuts in Baku this weekend after both men impressed in Formula 3 this year.

Australian Mansell, who finished fifth with ART in the final F3 standings, will take the place of Roman Stanek at Trident, whilst Williams Academy driver Browning, who fell just short of the title in third, will take Zak O’Sullivan’s drive at ART.

Upon the news of his promotion, Mansell said: “I can’t wait to make my FIA Formula 2 debut with Trident Motorsport.

“I’m extremely happy to race with this Italian team on the Baku street circuit and in the next two events before the end of the season. It will be a fiery debut on a challenging track like the Azerbaijani one, but I must confess I’m more excited than nervous.”

Team Manager Giacomo Ricci said: “We are extremely delighted to field Australian driver Christian Mansell in the next three rounds of the FIA Formula 2 Championship. I consider him one of the most talented emerging drivers we have seen this year in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he was in contention for the title until the final round in Monza.

“Christian is a complete driver, quick in qualifying, and extremely good at managing tyres and overtaking. Making his debut in Baku will certainly be an ambitious goal, not easy at all.

“We have carried out dedicated preparation work with him, and I am convinced that it will pay dividends, especially if there will be no interruptions in the free practice session. I am sure there are all the conditions to do well.”

Browning’s inclusion at ART transpired through O’Sullivan’s incapability to complete the year due to funding issues.

Writing on his X account, O’Sullivan, a fellow Williams Academy driver, said: “Firstly, I want to thank ART GP and Williams Racing for all of the support they have given me. This year we have had some incredible moments, multiple wins and a big highlight of winning the feature race in Monaco.

“Unfortunately in our sport, there are more factors at play than just the stopwatch. The simple issue comes down to funding, I won’t be able to complete this F2 season with ART GP.

“I’m gutted to not be able to show my talents for the rest of the year, but I want to say thank you to all of my sponsors, Williams and all of the supporters who are alongside me during this journey. Your support has been invaluable and I can’t wait to be able to drive for you and with you again soon.”

Trident’s Leonardo Fornaroli is the FIA Formula 3 points leader heading into the Austria round this weekend and the Italian has said his “main focus” is to pick up “as many points as possible” between now and the end of the season at Monza.

Fornaroli leads Luke Browning with 84 points to 79 in the Drivers’ standings despite not having won a race so far in the 2024 campaign.

His ascension back to the top came about after a podium finish in the Barcelona feature race where previous points leader Gabriele Mini failed to score.

Consistency has been key to Fornaroli’s campaign and that’s his target in Austria and beyond.

“The [Barcelona] feature race was very important for me because it allowed me to score a lot of points compared to the other championship contenders,” Fornaroli told select media including Motorsport Week.

“And the main goal looking forward to the season will be again to score as many points as possible, but without throwing away all the good things we are doing now and taking all the possibilities I can take.”

Fornaroli’s ‘main focus’ is on points rather than outright victories

Such is the competitive nature of F3 in 2024 that Arvid Lindblad became the first repeat winner of the campaign last time out at Barcelona in what was the 10th race of the season.

Fornaroli meanwhile has yet to pick up a victory, but his consistency has helped him rise above his competitors, with several of the race winners enduring inconsistency in comparison.

The F3 points leader admitted that “right now the goal is not to absolutely win every race, but to take as many points as possible even if it’s not a race win.”

Given his consistent campaign thus far, Fornaroli is the perfect person to explain why it’s so tough to achieve that in F3 this year and the Trident driver gave his take on the matter before running got underway at the Red Bull Ring.

“F3 is one of the toughest championships you can race in, so, of course, to be consistent is very tricky because you battle with very high level drivers,” he said.

“Especially also in qualifying you have to deliver a very good lap to always stay in the top five and as well in the races.”

Qualifying for the Austrian Formula 3 round commences at 14:00 local time on Friday.

FIA Formula 3 rookie Sami Meguetounif took his maiden victory after cooly managing his tyres at the iconic Imola circuit during Sunday’s Feature Race.

The Trident driver drove like an F3 veteran, controlling his pace and making moves when necessary to beat Saturday’s Sprint winner Oliver Goethe.

Meguetounif’s Trident team-mate Leonardo Fornaroli fought back to third after a mid-race engine misfire to streak fractionally ahead in the Drivers’ standings.

A chaotic Sprint saw Campos’ Goethe pick up the win after an opportune manoeuvre after a last-lap Virtual Safety Car and the Red Bull Junior set off from seventh on the grid in Sunday’s Feature.

Launching from pole was Trident’s Santiago Ramos, joined on the front row by Fornaroli with Meguetounif making it a Trident 1-2-3 on the grid.

The title picture ahead of lights out was tight, with Luke Browning, Fornaroli and Gabriele Mini tied on 37 points at the top after Saturday’s Sprint.

Fornaroli was best placed to move ahead thanks to his second-place spot on the gird with Mini lining up sixth and Browning ninth.

The three Tridents towed each other down to Tamburello at lights out and Ramos led the way ahead of team-mates, Fornaroli and Meguetounif as Browning made progress up to seventh.

From the outset, Meguetounif was under pressure from a pair of Red Bull Juniors, Arvin Lindblad and Goethe.

Goethe was eager to get moving up the field, nibbling at the rear of Lindblad as the field came around to start Lap 2 of 22.

Meanwhile, Ramos and Fornaroli were tightly packed as a leading pair stretching an advantage out front.

As DRS opened on Lap 3, Italian Fornaroli swept past his team-mate to take the lead as Browning utilised the aero device to do the same on Dino Beganovic to take sixth.

Goethe meanwhile, had made his way into the top three and set about chasing the two leaders, buoyed by his Sprint success on Saturday.

Browning’s ascent was temporarily halted when a move on Lindblad at Tamburello on Lap 4 didn’t come off, leaving him vulnerable to be repassed by Beganovic on the run to the Villeneuve chicane.

Five laps in and Goethe was showing to be the class of the field, drafting to the outside of Ramos using DRS before hustling around the outside of the Trident driver at Tamburello to take second.

A lap later Goethe found himself in the lead as Fornaroli shuffled down to fifth position with a temporary engine blip down the start/finish straight, undoing his hard work at the start of the race.

This meant polesitter Ramos was in a position to chase after Goethe from second and Meguetounif led a train of cars from third, followed closely by Lindblad, Fornaroli, Beganovic and Browning.

“Trust me, drive smooth,” was the call over Team Radio to Ramos on Lap 8 as he fought to stay within DRS range of Goethe at the front.

Seeking to recover from his engine misfire, Fornaroli made his way past Lindblad on Lap 10 at Tamburello to take P4 shortly ahead of half-race distance.

At this point, Goethe had stretched his lead over Ramos to 1.6s and the latter had found himself under DRS threat from his Trident team-mate Meguetounif.

It was clear Ramos hadn’t heeded his engineer’s advice to run smoothly and his tyres were cooked by Lap 12 after falling more than two seconds behind race leader Goethe and surrending second to Meguetounif.

The championship picture was continuing to look tight as the race progressed, with Fornaroli running in third, Browning moved up to just one place behind with a move on Beganovic on Lap 15.

Goethe’s claim for a double Imola win was under threat by Lap 17 as Meguetounif closed within DRS range of the race leader, having nursed his tyres well throughout the first 16 laps.

A lap later and DRS was enough to grant Meguetounif the lead into Tamburello with Fornaroli charging in third hoping to make it a Trident one-two.

With three laps to go Fornaroli had a look at Goethe into Tamburello, but the Campos driver was able to hold off his Trident rival, enabling Meguetounif to remain comfortably out in front.

A slight snap of oversteer coming out of Rivazza on Lap 20 made Fornaroli’s task to get second slightly harder with his tyres perhaps falling away from him.

As such, Browning in fourth was closing in on his championship rival, making it vital for Fornaroli to successfully put a move on Goethe as the field came around to start the final lap.

But the Italian wasn’t close enough coming into Tamburello and looked set to settle for third.

Meguetounif didn’t have to settle, however, and his successful tyre management granted him a well-earned victory.

Goethe finished off a positive Imola weekend in second with Fornaroli completing the podium.

Browning’s ninth to fourth run was another standout performance in the race and Beganovic put in an accomplished drive to complete the top five.

Mini finished in sixth ahead of Lindblad and Ramos, who fell down the order after overworking his tyres.

Mari Boya and Sebastian Montoya rounded out the top-10.

Fornaroli now leads the championship on 52 points, ahead of Browning on 49 points and Beganovic on 45 points.

Both Trident’s race winner Richard Verschoor and team-mate Roman Stanek have been disqualified from Saudi Arabia’s Formula 2 Sprint race after a technical breach.

F2 issued a report which read that: “The Trident #22 and #23 cars were found to have had an incorrect throttle pedal progressivity map installed prior to the race which was not in compliance with Article 8.2.6 of the Technical Regulations.”

As a result, Verschoor has been stripped of his victory, promoting MP Motorsport’s Dennis Hauger to first place and Hitech’s Paul Aron to second.

Van Amersfoort Racing’s Enzo Fittipaldi can now add a podium result to his records after being promoted to third, with Zane Maloney’s fine drive from 15th on the grid now resulting in a fourth-place finish.

DAMS Jak Crawford, Prema’s Andrea Antonelli, Campos Racing’s Josep Maria Martí and Invicta’s Kush Maini complete the points-paying positions to eighth.

Stanek loses 10th spot and as a result Maini’s Invicta teammate and McLaren Development Driver Gabriel Bortoleto completes the new top-10.

The amended result means that Maloney now sits with 41 points at the top of the Drivers’ standings, with Aron on 28 points in second.

Martí lies third with 26 points and new race winner Hauger sits fourth in the standings with 16 points.

Verschoor and Stanek remain with zero points on the board.

Trident’s Richard Verschoor converted a front row start into a race victory in the Formula 2 Sprint Race in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

MP Motorsort’s Dennis Hauger finished 0.7s shy in second, with Hitech rookie Paul Aron finishing third.

There was one absent figure in the form of feature race pole-winner Oliver Bearman, with the Prema river stepping up to the Ferrari Formula 1 garage in place of Carlos Sainz, who is recovering from an appendicitis operation.

As a result, Aron inherited the reverse grid Sprint pole, with Verschoor, Isack Hadjar, Hauger and Andrea Kimi Antonelli completing the top five spots on the grid.

Enzo Fittipaldi started sixth, Victor Martins seventh, Jak Crawford eighth, Kush Maini ninth and Josep Maria Marti lined up at the end of the fifth row.

Championship leader and double Bahrain race winner Zane Maloney resigned to a lowly 15th place grid slot.

Initially slated to get underway at 18:10 local time, formation lap proceedings were slightly delayed to the tune of 10 minutes.

At lights out and Aron retained the lead into Turn 1, meanwhile Antonelli had a nightmare start from fifth, dropping down the order and getting embroiled in a mid pack melee, tagging the right rear of Crawford’s DAMS car and losing his front wing endplate.

Art Grand Prix’s Victor Martins also had trouble out of the first sequence of corners, sustaining damage as he was squeezed hard into the outside wall out the exit of Turn 2 and dropping out of the race

The Safety Car was then deployed before the end of the first lap with Williams Academy Drivers Zak O’Sullivan (ART GP) and Franco Colapinto (MP Motorsport) stalling at the race start, lucky not to be collected from those starting behind.

Aron led from Verschoor, Hadjar, Hauger and Maini as the field toured behind the Safety Car.

At the end of the fourth lap of 20 it was time for green flag racing with the Safety Car due to come back into the pits.

Aron pulled the pin on the restart ahead of the final corner and led the field at the start of Lap 5.

Maini attempted a pass on Hauger to take fourth toward the end of Lap 5 but to no avail, meanwhile Maloney successfully ascended into eighth at the start of Lap 6.

The pack at the front were tightly packed together with Aron snaking his way down the start/finish straight to start Lap 7 with Verschoor, Hadjar and Hauger all within two seconds of the race leader.

Keeping tabs on Aron was Verschoor and the Trident driver lunged down the inside of Turn 1 to take the lead on Lap 8 as Enzo Fittipaldi poached fifth and fastest lap in equal measure.

Hauger too a leaf out of Verschoor’s book as he picked of Hadjar for third into Turn 1 on Lap 10.

The Safety Car was then deployed for the second time after Amaury Cordeel Hitech spun and stopped on track at Turn 2 with the field carried through the pit-lane to complete half race. distance

As Lap 11 drew to a close the Safety Car returned to pitlan and it was Verschoor’s turn to lead the field back to green.

The Trident driver did so comfortably and maintained the lead as Maloney dove down the inside of Maini at Turn 1 to take sixth.

As the field rounded the circuit to start Lap 14, Fittipaldi vaulted Hadjar to take fourth and Crawford passed Maini for seventh, making his second overtake in as many laps.

Maloney tried a move on Hadjar around the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 15 but had to escape off road, passing the Red Bull Junior off track before giving the positon back, making him vulnerable to a hard charging Crawford who poached sixth off of the championship leader in the Tunr 22/23 sequence.

But Maloney reclaimed the position at the Start of Lap 16, with Antonelli up into the top 10 after passing Marti.

Out front with five laps remaining, Verschoor enjoyed 1.6s lead over Aron as debris littered the track in Sector 3 after Juan Manuel Correa clipped the wall, causing he American to retire and bringing out the yellow flag, then the Virtual Safety Car on Lap 17 to swiftly remove the stranded carbon.

Green flag conditions were reinstated with just over three laps remaining as Verschoor maintained his slight advantage and Aron had Hauger for close company.

Hauger used DRS to take second position at the start of Lap 18, subsequently setting the fastest lap but with Aron still on his tail.

Maloney’s charge from 15th continued at the start of the penultimate lap as he used Turn 1 again to make a move, this time on Hadjar to take fifth.

Hadjar’s race then went south as he slowed with an apparent technical problem, dropping out of contention and the points.

Verschoor held on out front to take a approximate one second winning margin over MP Motorsport’s Hauger in second, with Sprint polesitter Aron completing the podium and taking bonus point for fastest lap.

Fittipaldi took fourth for Van Amersoort Racing with Maloney rounding out the top five.

Crawford came home in sixth with Prema rookie Antonelli and Campos Racing’s Marti completing the top eight and the points paying positions.

Trident has confirmed that Roman Stanek will return with the team to embark upon his second season in Formula 2, leaving only one position to be filled on the 2024 grid.

Stanek moved across to Trident for his third campaign in Formula 3 in 2022, where he registered one victory, four podiums and two fastest places to place fifth overall.

The Czech driver then stepped up to the second tier last term with the team and classified 18th in the Drivers’ Championship after accruing 15 points from 26 rounds.

The announcement that Trident has retained Stanek to partner Richard Verschoor means the upcoming season’s roster is complete except for the second PHM Racing seat.

Trident Team Manager Giacomo Ricci is optimistic it has the ideal driving pairing as it bids to improve upon a 10th-place finish in last season’s Teams’ Championship.

“We are delighted to continue our collaboration with Roman Stanek, who has been part of our family for a long time and was able to provide winning results in the past,” Ricci said.

“We are certain that all the ingredients are there to do well and achieve increasingly ambitious goals together.

“The experience acquired in 2023 will prove pivotal to start the new season with the best conditions and maximum determination.”

Gabriel Bortoleto has taken back-to-back Feature Race victories in the FIA Formula 3 Championship after prevailing in Melbourne.

The Brazilian driver backed up his strong drive from Bahrain with an impressive run to first place at the Albert Park track, where he was forced to defend from Gregoire Saucy.

Bortoleto and Saucy started in first and second respectively, with the former managing to retain his lead off the line.

There were a number of early retirements in the race, including Sebastian Montoya, who finished Saturday’s race on the podium.

Franco Colapinto, who suffered a heartbreaking disqualification from a race-winning position on Saturday, crashed out, as did Mari Boya who was involved in a high-speed collision.

Kaylen Frederick also retired under the Safety Car after making contact with Nikola Tsolov.

Another Safety Car was called on lap 12 when Ido Cohen was pitched into the wall by Rafael Villagomez.

At the front, Saucy hounded Bortoleto in the final laps but couldn’t overtake, forcing him to settle for second place.

Gabriele Mini took the final spot on the podium as he fell away from the leading duo as the race wore on.

Bortoleto’s Trident team-mate Leonardo Fornaroli was fourth, with Sprint Race winner Zak O’Sullivan taking fifth on the road.

Luke Browning was sixth following his difficult day on Saturday, ahead of the other two Prema drivers of Paul Aron and Dino Beganovic.

Pepe Marti arguably produced the drive of the day as he advanced from 30th to ninth at the chequered flag, while Taylor Barnard took the final point on offer.
