The FIA has revealed the identity of the 10 teams that will participate in the Formula 3 championship over the next three years as the feeder looks set to deliver more blockbuster racing.

F3 will once again have a 30-car grid from 2025 to 2027, with each team fielding three cars at all rounds, providing opportunities for younger drivers to impress.

9 of the 10 teams remain in the category, including Trident, following their Drivers’ Championship win with Leonardo Fornaroli and Prema, who once again took the Teams’ Championship.

A new name will arrive in the series next year, with DAMS making its debut, giving the team representation in F3 and F2 as it replaces outgoing Jenzer Motorsport.

In a statement, FIA Formula 3 CEO Bruno Michel highlighted the pedigree of the teams and wished Jenzer Motorsport well as it embarks on its new ventures next season.

“For the next three-year cycle, we have retained nine of our current teams. Their level of professionalism and expertise guarantee the best preparation for the young drivers who aspire to progress to the highest levels of motorsport.

“To complete the grid, we welcome DAMS to the list of selected teams. We know them very well from the FIA Formula 2 Championship. Their pedigree and level of performance make them the perfect addition to the F3 field,” he said.

“Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andreas Jenzer and everyone at Jenzer Motorsport for their commitment to Formula 3 since the beginning of the category. They have left their mark in the Championship, and I completely respect their decision to focus now on new challenges.” he concluded.

A new car for a new era

The first round of the new F3 season begins in March 2025, supporting the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, with a new Dallara car making its much-anticipated debut after its shakedown at Varano last month.

A new engine built by Mecachrome will also debut, with teams hoping for better reliability after various issues plagued the series in the last few seasons.

Aston Martin Development Programme driver Jak Crawford will remain with DAMS Lucas Oil for the 2025 FIA Formula 2 season.

The American is currently in fifth place in the Drivers’ Standings, in a season which has so far yielded five podiums, including a victory in Barcelona.

It will be the 19-year-old’s third season in the competition, after a 2024 that has also seen him drive a Formula 1 car for the first time – the AMR22 – which came a month after a test alongside Zane Maloney for the Andretti FIA Formula E team in Berlin.

In a statement, Crawford said he was “really happy” to be continuing with the French team, adding:

“We’ve still got two rounds of this season to go as we’re pushing for a top-five finish, and I hope that we can take a further step forward next year, to be challenge more regularly at the front.

“I can see how determined everyone in the team is to compete further up the grid, which is why I’ve decided to stay for a second year.

“Motor racing is a team sport and not an individual one, so we’ll improve together and hopefully next year we can see the rewards on track.”

Charles Pic, former F1 and FE driver and now Team Owner of DAMS, said: “We’re thrilled to retain Jak for the 2025 season after a year that has produced by high and low points.

“Throughout the campaign, he’s kept his head down and worked hard, which shows his great attitude. It’s a pleasure to continue with him for a second season, and our objective is to consistently compete at the front of the grid.

“Jak has shown his ability this year, appearing on the podium five times and putting in several strong performances.”

Crawford was originally a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, joining in 2020, but shortly after leaving earlier this year, he was picked-up by Aston Martin, who are thought to be including him further in their plans for next year.

Arthur Leclerc has been promoted to Formula 2 with DAMS for the 2023 season, after two Formula 3 seasons competing with PREMA.

The Ferrari junior driver made his F3 debut in 2021, winning a total of 10 races in two seasons. He finished sixth in the championship in a 2022 season that included a feature race win in Silverstone.

Leclerc, the younger brother of Ferrari Formula 1 driver, Charles, is looking forward to getting started in his new surroundings.

“I’m delighted to be making the step up to Formula 2 with DAMS in 2023,” he said.

“They’re a very successful team that has achieved great results in the championship, and I hope I can be a part of that and continue the team’s success.

“Charles Pic has done an amazing job to help the team back to winning ways throughout the season and I’m aiming to keep that going next year.

“We’ve a lot of work to do before the start of the new campaign in Bahrain in March, and I’m really looking forward to getting started in the post-season test in Abu Dhabi!”

DAMS finished sixth in the F2 championship this year, with a combination of Roy Nissany, Ayumu Iwasa, and Luca Ghiotto, who returned during Nissany’s ban following the Dutch Grand Prix.

Iwasa won the final feature race of the season in Abu Dhabi last weekend, after claiming a sprint race victory in Monza.

DAMS has announced the signing of Honda Formula Dream Project driver Ayumu Iwasa for the 2022 FIA Formula 2 season.

Iwasa spent 2021 racing in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, taking one win and one further podium across the campaign.

The Japanese driver ended the year 12th in the Drivers’ Championship for Hitech Grand Prix.

With the confirmation of Iwasa, DAMS has completed its line-up for this year, having previously confirmed that Roy Nissany would continue with the team in 2022.

“I’m very excited to take on my first year of F2 with DAMS,” Iwasa said. “We worked together at the test in December and I learnt a lot about the car and the team.

“We collected plenty of data, which will be useful ahead of the pre-season test. I’ll be taking on some new tracks this year, which will be a challenge but I’m looking forward to developing my skills throughout the season.

“I used to live in Le Mans when I was racing in French F4 so it’s great to be competing in F2 with a team based in the area. I can’t wait to arrive in Bahrain and get back on track with DAMS for testing on 2-4 March.”

DAMS ended the 2021 F2 season eighth in the Teams’ standings, scoring a single victory across the campaign.

Team co-owners Gregory and Olivier Driot said of Iwasa’s signing: “We are extremely happy to welcome Ayumu to the team.

“Ayumu started his single-seater career in Europe very successfully by winning the Formula 4 French Championship which is an impressive feat. He also had a strong first season in F3, managing to take victory in Hungary in front of some very experienced competitors last July.

“This year is going to be a whole new challenge for him in F2 but Ayumu showed during the Abu Dhabi test that he has the potential to perform at this level.

“For DAMS it’s also very exciting to work with Red Bull, who we have had some great success with in the past, and we are proud to be starting a new partnership with Honda.”

Nissany, who took part in three practice sessions for Williams this year, made his debut in Formula 2 in 2018 and after missing the 2019 season returned in 2020.

For 2021 he linked up with DAMS and claimed a maiden podium finish in Monaco en route to 16th in the overall standings.

All 22 drivers set their fastest times in morning, with the afternoon session reserved for longer runs to round out the three-day test.

Armstrong’s fastest lap was a 1:42.173s, narrowly edging out the Hitech Grand Prix duo of Liam Lawson and Juri Vips in second and third respectively.

Alpine F1 junior Guanyu Zhou was fourth, ahead of F3 graduate Lirim Zendeli, driving for MP Motorsport.

Ralph Boschung, who returns to F2 this year with Campos, was seventh heading Richard Verschoor for MP Motorsport and the second Prema driven by reigning F3 Champion Oscar Piastri.

Felipe Drugovich, who has made the switch from MP Motorsport to UNI-Virtuosi for the upcoming campaign, rounded out the top 10.

The 2021 F2 season is set to get underway later this month at the Bahrain International Circuit, supporting the opening F1 grand prix weekend of the year.

Following the start of the F2 campaign, a second test will be held in April at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Nissany will partner Ferrari junior driver Marcus Armstrong during his third campaign in F2, having raced for Campos and Trident in 2018 and 2020 respectively.

Nissany’s best result in the series came last year in the form of an eighth-place finish at the Feature Race at Spa-Francorchamps, earning him reverse grid pole for the Sprint Race.

After ending the year 19th in the Drivers’ Championship, the Israeli driver received his first taste with DAMS at the post-season F2 test in Bahrain.

“I’m thrilled to be part of such a highly respected team as DAMS,” Nissany said.

“They have an amazing history at this level and a strong reputation in Formula 2, so I’m excited to be joining.

“We have already put some strong work in during last year’s post-season test and I’m looking forward to getting the season underway in March.

“Hopefully we’ll be fighting at the front of the field. I believe we have a very exciting journey ahead so I’m keen to start.”

DAMS ended the 2020 F2 season eighth in the Teams’ Championship, picking up one race win during the year with Dan Ticktum.

Nissany’s F2 duties will run alongside his role with Williams this year, which will see him take part in pre-season testing with the team, as well as three FP1 sessions during the season.

Ferrari-backed youngster Marcus Armstrong will remain in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2021, switching to DAMS for his sophomore campaign.

Having made the step up to the series in 2020 with ART Grand Prix following a positive 2019 Formula 3 season, Armstrong endured a difficult year, scoring two podiums across the calendar.

Both top three results came at the opening two rounds of the year in Austria, before the Kiwi encountered a 12-race streak of non-point finishes.

The final events of the year saw the Ferrari junior driver dip back into the points, which included a fourth-place finish at the penultimate Sprint Race of the season in Bahrain.

For his second season in the Championship, Armstrong moves to DAMS, who finished the 2020 campaign eighth in the Teams’ standings.

“I’m very excited to be joining DAMS, it’s been a long time coming as there was a lot of interest in working together last season,” Armstrong said.

“Formula 2 is such a competitive championship and with only eight events it’s important to start on the right foot in an experienced team that’s used to winning.

“DAMS has a massive history, especially in GP2 and F2 – it’s one of, if not the, best to be with.”

After a challenging first year in F2, Armstrong has set his sights on obtaining the Championship title in 2021.

“In the short time I’ve worked with the team it’s already clear they bring out the best in people and have the resources to give me exactly what I need,” he commented.

“We are aiming for the title. We’ve discussed that it’s not in my interest to finish second and they firmly agreed because they have the exact same targets.

“By no means is it going to be easy with such fierce competition, but I feel that when I’m in the right environment with a great team I can really do special things.”

DAMS has confirmed that Sean Gelael will return to the team at the next Formula 2 round in Bahrain after recovering from his injuries.

Gelael suffered a broken vertebrae during the Feature Race at Barcelona last month and was ruled out of competition for six weeks.

DAMS acquired the services of Red Bull junior Juri Vips as his replacement, with the Estonian standing in at the last four F2 rounds.

He recorded two finishes inside the points, including a podium at Mugello.

“I’d like to thank DAMS for the opportunity to race in F2 these last four rounds,” Vips said after last weekend’s event in Sochi.

“I really enjoyed it and hope I can join the team again in the future.”

Just two rounds remain in the 2020 Championship, with both taking place in Bahrain on the Formula 1 weekend roster.

The first event will take place at the end of November on the grand prix layout, while the second weekend will run one week later around the ‘outer’ layout.

DAMS’ Managing Director Francois Sicard thanked Vips for “all his hard work since filling in for Sean”, adding the team “wish him the best of luck” going forward.

Gelael’s best result this season came at the second round in Austria, where he took a seventh place finish in the Sprint Race.

DAMS currently sits eighth in the Teams’ Championship, 21.5 points behind MP Motorsport, who lie one position in front.

Red Bull-backed youngster Juri Vips will replace Sean Gelael at DAMS for the next three rounds of the FIA Formula 2 Championship.

The Estonian finished fourth in FIA Formula 3 in 2019 with Hitech before recently racing in the Formula Regional European Championship for Prema.

He was set to compete in the Japan-based Super Formula series this year but those plans were thwarted by entry restrictions due to coronavirus, which has ruled him out of next weekend’s season opener.

Gelael had announced earlier this week that he would be on the sidelines for at least six weeks as he recovers from the small vertebra fractured that he sustained in an airborne incident in Spain.

Vips, last year’s Macau Grand Prix runner-up, has now been drafted in to replace Gelael.

Vips will be competing in an F2 car for the first time, beginning at Spa-Francorchamps, the first of the next triple-header before heading to Italian venues Monza and Mugello.

He will partner former Red Bull youngster Dan Ticktum at DAMS.

“I’m very thankful and happy for the opportunity that DAMS has given me,” Vips said.

“I know it’s going to be really difficult to just jump in with more than half the F2 season already completed, but I will do everything I can to give the team as strong as a result as they deserve.

“I’m also looking forward to working alongside Dan, who I’m sure will help me get up to speed, and we will aim to get good points for the team.”

Vips will be the third Red Bull junior in Formula 2, joining Carlin pair Yuki Tsunoda and Jehan Daruvala.
