Inter Europol Competition secured victory just minutes before the end of the 12 Hours of Sebring

Inter Europol Competition driver Tom Dillmann recalled his team’s inconceivable LMP2 victory at the end of the IMSA 12 Hours of Sebring.

Dillmann took on the final 31-minute sprint to the finish at the wheel of the team’s #43 Oreca 07 LMP2.

The Frenchman held second place behind young star and Peugeot Hypercar driver Malthe Jakobsen and his #04 Crowdstrike Racing Oreca.

Dillmann said in the post-race press conference: “The team prior to the yellow was catching very quickly the cross strikes, so I knew we had good pace.

“But to be fast enough to overtake is another story with this kind of high downforce car.

“I knew we had a shot, but in IMSA you can really go from hero-to-zero in an instant in those last few minutes.

“I kept pressuring him because I know that if you have the pressure behind, you have to risk a lot in traffic.”

The LMP2 lead fight intensified as the checkered flag grew nearer and nearer with the pair making their way through GT traffic.

Jakobsen mistakenly tapped the rear of Matt Bell’s #13 AWA Corvette Z06 GT3.R into Sunset Bend, thus earning the race leader a drive-through penalty.

This critical error by the #04 Oreca driver allowed Dillmann to take up victory in the final 10 minutes whilst Jakobsen fell down to sixth after serving his penalty.

Dillmann relates to Jakobsen’s error

“[It] happened to me a month ago,” he added.

“I was on the other side; I was leading in Asian Le Mans, and I had a mistake in traffic. I know what can happen.

“It happened and I could take the lead, and from then on I think I had enough pace to control the race.

“You still need to go through GT traffic, which is not easy.

“They are all packed, they are all racing for position.

“They are not letting you by easy.

“Once I was through the GT traffic, I knew it was under control and brought it home.”

Nick Boulle will soon confirm the team he will compete with at the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours

Reigning IMSA LMP2 champion Nick Boulle hinted towards running his 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours invitation with the Inter Europol Competition team.

Speaking in a pre-Daytona 24 Hours briefing, the reigning IMSA SportsCar Championship title-winner told media – including Motorsport Week – about his plans on using his Le Mans invitation, strongly suggesting the Centenary Le Mans-winning team.

“We should have an announcement pretty soon,” teased Boulle.

“I think it’s highly likely it’s going to be Inter Europol.

“We had a great time with them last year and after winning the championship, we’d love to try and go chase a Le Mans victory with them.”

“… The (LMP2) competition is so high and getting to drive alongside Tom [Dillmann] last year – I learned a ton.

“Hopefully get to use it against him a little bit this year and I’m really looking forward to getting in the blue car with United at Daytona, and hopefully we can figure out some more for later in the year.

“But right now our focus is just on making a strong result at the Rolex 24 and then hoping we can piece together more for the rest of the year.”

Boulle starting 2025 after prior success

He will drive the #2 United Autosports machine for the approaching season-opener, the 24 Hours of Daytona on 25-26 January, who are double Le Mans winners including last year’s running in 2024.

Boulle earned his Le Mans invitation at the end of last year’s successful IMSA campaign with the #52 Oreca 07 PR1 Mathiasen by Inter Europol team.

He finished joint-highest in the LMP2 drivers’ standings and in the Jim Trueman Award which rivalled the FIA Bronze-graded drivers in the category.

The Polish bakery chain notably won the Centenary edition of Le Mans in 2023, in the LMP2 category, and pursued IMSA racing after the FIA World Endurance Championship demoted the LMP2 category for a single appearance at Le Mans, one of the rounds on the WEC schedule.

For the 2025 season, PR1 Mathiasen and Inter Europol are fielding separate Oreca 07 entries after having partnered together towards championship glory.

After earning their first 24-hour race victory in 2023, the Inter Europol outfit are highly set on winning another at Daytona and Le Mans on 14-15 June.

Antonio Felix da Costa will make his second IMSA appearance at next year's season-opener

Inter Europol Competition has confirmed Antonio Felix da Costa in their 2025 IMSA SportsCar Championship lineup for the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The famed Polish bakery outfit has outlined da Costa in their full driver lineup ahead of the 2025 IMSA season.

Da Costa has previously entered just one IMSA race with the Jackie Chan-JOTA project, also in an Oreca 07 LMP2.

Despite the seven-year gap since his only Daytona appearance, he is no stranger to sportscar racing. He drove with BMW in the GTE Pro class and JOTA across four FIA World Endurance Championship seasons in LMP2 and Hypercar machinery.

The Portuguese driver said: “I’m very happy to get myself a shot at the Daytona 24 Hours.

“Especially with the championship-winning team from IMSA last year.

“Inter Europol has accomplished a lot in the last few years, so it’s the perfect place for me to come back into the LMP2 class, and I can’t wait to get started and work with the whole team and my teammates.”

Inter Europol’s 2025 driver pairing

During the 2024 season, the Centenary Le Mans winning outfit, Inter Europol, entered IMSA for the first time after LMP2 left the WEC full-season package.

They partnered with the 2023 IMSA LMP2 champions PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports and successfully won this year’s title after the season finale in October.

For 2025, however, they have chosen to pursue the season by their own means.

Tom Dillmann has continued with the team having been a key part of their title-winning 2024 season campaign, now as a third driver at the Endurance Cup rounds.

Bjoy Garg will compete with Jon Field for the full 2025 season, having completed his first LMP2 Endurance season with United Autosports – and claimed LMP2 victory at Le Mans.

Field has a plethora of experience in the American sportscar racing scene from Grand Am and the American Le Mans Series, and tested recently with Inter Europol.

He said: “I’m thrilled to be back racing in the IMSA championship once again… although it’s changed a bit since I last raced in the series.

“I am pleased to be racing with Inter Europol Competition too.

“They have a strong pedigree in LMP2 racing, so I feel I am in good hands with them and my co-drivers.

“Joining the team off the back of their IMSA LMP2 championship win last season, I feel we have a good package to go for that championship win once again.

“I can’t wait to get started at Daytona.”

The 2025 IMSA season-opener commences on 25-26 January 2025 where Inter Europol will begin their LMP2 title defence.

Inter Europol Competition has confirmed their own #43 Oreca 07 LMP2 entry in the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as part of the Endurance Cup schedule.

The Polish bakery chain currently run an ongoing partnership with reigning LMP2 champions and current championship leaders PR1 Mathiasen on their #52 Oreca 07.

Having run the #43 in their appearances at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the European Le Mans Series, Inter Europol will set up their own base in the US for next year’s season for the IMSA #43 entrant.

They will recall their joint experience with PR1 during the course of the 2024 season, which is set to take on its penultimate round at Indianapolis for a six-hour race on 22 September.

At a narrow margin, their #52 Oreca joint-entry narrowly leads the IMSA LMP2 standings by 27 points over the #74 Riley Oreca, who themselves made the step into LMP2 after the LMP3 category was removed from the SportsCar Championship multiple selection of racing car categories.

In addition to declaring their LMP2 and LMP3 intentions for the Asian Le Mans Series, Team Manager Sascha Fassbender added: “Additionally, we’re thrilled to be participating in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2025.

“This will be under ‘Inter Europol Competition’, and we will set up our base in the United States for this programme.

“We’re all looking forward to this new challenge for our team.

“The driver announcements will come later in the year, and yes, we could not be more excited for this new chapter as we continue to perform at such a high level and grow our team.”

Having won the Centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 category, they will seek out the 24 Hours of Daytona which will begin next year’s single-handed campaign.

Jakub ‘Kuba’ Smiechowski, Clement Novalak and Vlad Lomko will compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the #34 Inter Europol Competition Oreca 07 as the team act as reigning LMP2 winners from last year.

After claiming their first Le Mans victory in last year’s Centenary Edition, the Polish-run team will run a mostly different driver lineup for the race this time round with just one Oreca on 15-16 June.

For the 92nd running of the historic French endurance classic, Smiechowski will return to La Sarthe having done two race starts in his first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship campaign for 2024.

European Le Mans Series drivers Novalak and Lomko expect to bring the competition against a thoroughly competitive LMP2 field, with the former driver marking his Le Mans debut.

Smiechowski said: “It seems that Le Mans actually chooses its winner, so all we can really do is to go there and maximise our chances. We’re in a good position to do it, it’s our goal, and the result will then come to us.

“As the defending winner, there is no real pressure; in fact, the opposite is true, as we have achieved what we wanted to achieve. For me personally, whatever comes after—I feel good with what we have already done—but obviously, I want to go for another win.”

Novalak added: “It’s my second take of a 24 Hours race this year, and hopefully, this will be smoother for me, having eventually missed out on the Rolex 24 at Daytona. I’m really looking forward to it; it’s a driver’s favourite and one that we all look forward to immensely.

“Being with such a strong team, one that won last year, gives me so much confidence.

“There will be a lot of preparation ahead, but running at night at such a great circuit and dealing with the challenges as they come along will be fun.”

“It’s an honour to be joining Inter Europol Competition for Le Mans,” concluded Lomko.

“I am confident ahead of the race; Kuba has already won this race and has the experience to do it again, while we know Clem is quick.

“Last year, I took part but didn’t finish, so this year, I hope to go the distance with the #34. The team is really experienced and has already done one 24-hour race this year, and we were rather unlucky not to get a podium at Daytona.

“In the run-up to the event, I am racing with the team in European Le Mans this weekend at Paul Ricard; then I will do a lot of simulator work. Maybe I will see if the other two drivers wish to do a 24-hour sim.

“This is useful in helping me to prepare. I can’t wait.”

Inter Europol by PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports has confirmed Jakub ‘Kuba’ Smiechowski, Tom Dillmann, Clement Novalak and Nick Boulle in their #52 Oreca 07 LMP2 driver lineup for the 24 Hours of Daytona on 27-28 January.

The Centenary Le Mans-winning outfit commences its new partnership with the reigning and four-time IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar LMP2 champions at the 2024 season-opener.

As the team’s Bronze-rated driver, Boulle brings experience to the Daytona 24, having won the LMPC class in 2017.

He will partner Smeichowski for the full season, whilst Dillmann is expected to undertake the role of Endurance Cup driver and Novalak will be making his 24-hour car race debut with a Daytona appearance.

The Daytona International Speedway Road Course will host the IMSA 2024 opener at the end of January, bringing together 13 LMP2 competitors amidst the four classes.

Smiechowski said: “A new year brings us new challenges. After a great 2023 season (as WEC LMP2 vice-champions and Le Mans class winners) we are focusing on IMSA this year.

“We have a very good and experienced team and intend to take full advantage of that. We start with the legendary race at Daytona.

“After the first tests in December, I am very satisfied.

“Of course, I have to get used to the American style, but I think we already got along perfectly during the tests.

“Combining the experience of Inter Europol Competition and PR1, we will certainly be strong.”

Novalak added: “I’m thrilled to be racing this year at the Daytona 24 hours in IMSA with Inter Europol.

“It was amazing to test with them last year for my first time on American soil, and I’m really looking forward to racing with them.

“I’ve matched well with the boys and girls over at IEC/PR1, and they’ve really helped me out in getting comfortable with the car, so I can’t wait to be back in the car at the Roar.”

The ‘Roar Before the 24’ testing and qualifying will take place prior to the Daytona 24-Hour race week, which will continue with free practice and the race itself.

Boulle commented: “Clearly, Inter Europol brings a lot of knowledge and history to the team for this year, and combining that with PR1 Motorsport’s focus on success, I think, will make for a potent combination.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Inter Europol crew.

“My first working days with the team will be at the Roar Before the 24, and while it has been some time since I have gotten behind the wheel of a prototype, I think the team will help me get comfortable and back up to pace quickly as we prepare for the Rolex 24 and the season we have ahead together.”

The LMP2 class will take part in all six of the Endurance Cup races, in addition to the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Road America sprint races.

Inter Europol Competition driver Fabio Scherer spoke to Motorsport Week in-depth about the Centenary Le Mans 24 Hours, nursing an injured foot en route to the LMP2 win, and more.

A tale of perseverance and resilience propelled Scherer and Inter Europol Competition to become Centenary Le Mans winners and title-contenders for the final World Endurance Championship LMP2 title.

Scherer joined the Inter Europol Competition team in 2022 across a select number of WEC races, the full European Le Mans Series campaigns, and Le Mans inbetween.

His FIA silver licence was uprated to gold by the end of 2021, which meant that he could not continue with the WEC United Autosports team he was part of during his debut sportscar season.

This year has been the most successful for the Polish bakery privateer, most notably winning in a highly competitive LMP2 category at the Centenary Le Mans 24 Hours.

With an injured foot, Scherer won the race with Jakub ‘Kuba’ Smiechowski and Albert Costa in the team’s WEC #34 Oreca 07 LMP2 car.

“Working with Albert and Kuba has been great,” said Scherer.

“Albert is a quick driver, and Kuba has been a great silver because he doesn’t make any mistakes.”

“I have seen a massive improvement from the whole team since last year.”

Scherer has competed in both European Le Mans Series and WEC campaigns for IE Competition, most notably at the 2022 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps when the team charged from last on the grid to second place.

Earlier this year at the 6 Hours of Spa, Inter Europol finished on their first WEC podium after a rain-soaked race, and without tyre warmers.

One of the highlights, for both Scherer and the Inter Europol team, has been the Centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans, which marked 100 years since the inception of the famed endurance race at La Sarthe.

Costa qualified the car in 13th position in LMP2, after his best attempts were unable to get the team through to the Hyperpole session.

Scherer, meanwhile, took the race start again this year in one of two Inter Europol Oreca 07s.

However, early in the race a very localised rain shower affected the first sector, as a mixture of the 62 cars opted for slicks or wet compound tyres.

“Driving at Le Mans start on slicks, we decided to be cautious,” he said, with the car amidst a fiesty LMP2 field.

“The race is not won on the opening lap or the opening hours.”

Unlike at Spa-Francorchamps, the rain at the start decreased in intensity.

Ten minutes after the safety car was deployed for Jack Aitken’s opening-lap incident — which caused debris at the first chicane on the Mulsanne straight — the team changed to Kuba as a “tactical decision” to start fulfilling his drive time.

At such an early point, it was during this pit stop when Scherer’s left foot was run over by the Corvette.

It was only after the race when the full details of the injury became apparent: ligament damage and an incomplete fracture, which had caused him to limp in and out of the car for the majority of the race.

Following intervention from the team’s physiotherapist, while still uncomfortable, Scherer was well aware of the speed in the package; his determination was stronger than ever to continue pushing, with the car in winning contention.

“The adrenaline helped mask the pain during the course of the race, plus my professional background in skiing helped me find ways of coping with the injury.

“I still braked with my left foot, but instead of turning the ankle, I pushed my left leg, having never braked with my right foot so I did not decide to do so.

By the sixth hour, the team’s #34 Oreca 07 climbed up into the lead of 22 LMP2 cars which were running.

“We were fighting for a potential Le Mans victory, and I did not think much about the injury — just our target to win.”

It was, however, not until the night phase arrived when the rain became more present, and caused several cars to go off the track as others steadily nursed their slicks back around to the pit box for wets.

“Surviving and keeping the lead during the heavy rain conditions in the night truly earned us the win.

“The long safety car period meant we couldn’t keep tyres up to temperature, but we just wanted to make it through the most critical phase.”

Kuba and Costa primarily interchanged driving duties during the early hours of the morning, until Scherer got back in the car at approximately 6.30 am local time.

A quadruple stint by Costa preceded Scherer’s final stint to lead Inter Europol towards their maiden victory, albeit with Swiss compatriot Louis Deletraz catching behind for Team WRT.

“I was not able to fulfil my best potential nursing the injury, but I was able to do enough to keep [Louis] Deletraz from catching me in the final stint.”

By the chequered flag, Scherer finished 21 seconds ahead of second-placed Deletraz of the #41 WRT.

The #34’s quickest race lap time was a 3:37.180 by the Swiss driver set on Lap 158, enough for the fifth-fastest race lap in the LMP2 category by the end.

“Taking the chequered flag was an unbelievable high, a memory I’ll never forget.

“After showing potential for the win last year and encountering an alternator failure, it felt like we completed something we started a long time ago.

“Our reliability was fine throughout the race, apart from a brief trip through a gravel trap.

“Compared to the start, the car felt dramatically different after various weather conditions, components like the clutch and brakes were worn in, and the track was rubbered in.”

The team won from 13th on the grid, a feat never achieved in the LMP2 category before, and Scherer described the podium view over a record-high attendance of fans.

“Wherever you looked, there were people.

“The atmosphere was incredible at the Centenary Le Mans.

“It was amazing to stand on the top step of the podium, and share the celebrations with the team — it was a crazy, emotional positive from a small team from Poland against big names like JOTA, WRT and United Autosports.”

“After the race, we saw and stopped by some fans on a roundabout and decided to share the champagne with them and show them the trophy.

“Hearing (car) horns as others joined in celebrations, it was amazing to see how much the win meant to everyone else as well as our own team.”

The injury took three weeks to recover through bespoke training, although the time passed quicker than expected, according to Scherer.

After securing the full 50 points from Le Mans, the #34 crew scored fourth place and 10 points at Monza just four weeks after Le Mans.

Their title rivals, the #41 WRT crew, won the 6 Hours of Fuji in LMP2 whilst the #34 IE Competition team managed ninth place and two points.

WRT’s #41 crew of Rui Andrade, Louis Deletraz and Robert Kubica lead the LMP2 standings on 135 points, as the #34 crew sit on 102.

Most crucially, Inter Europol must win in Bahrain to narrow down the gap, if not also to defend their P2 spot from the #22 United Autosports team situated one point behind.

After a difficult 6 Hours of Fuji, Scherer consolidated on the team’s expectations into the 8 Hours of Bahrain finale on 4 November.

“We want to finish the season on a high in Bahrain, and Fuji was our low and consistency was lacking a bit.

“Bahrain will be full-risk with no opportunity to waste if we want to become LMP2 champions from P2 in the standings.

“We should be very proud of our performance this year regardless of the result.”

Scherer shared the disappointment for LMP2’s WEC departure in regards to IE Competition’s recent progression, but points out the expectations of a growing Hypercar class.

As winners this year, Inter Europol are automatically invited to next year’s Le Mans 24 Hours which will still feature LMP2 competition, even if not in the full-season WEC package.

Above all, Scherer’s ardour to win the Centenary Le Mans was so intense, that even a foot injury did not overshadow his perseverance having spent much of the year preparing for one of the most decorated editions of Le Mans since 1923.

The reigning LMP2 winners at the Le Mans 24 Hours has announced a debut IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar campaign next year in partnership with four-time IMSA LMP2 champions PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports.

Under the name ‘Inter Europol by PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports’, the full-season partnership will see the Centenary Le Mans winning-Polish bakery privateer debut in the North American-based sportscar championship.

Earlier this week, 48 official entries were unveiled for the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech season featuring 12 LMP2 cars, one of which will be the sole Ligier run by Sean Creech.

PR1 Mathiasen has competed in the IMSA-sanctioned championship since 2014, and prior since 2010 in the ACO-sanctioned American Le Mans Series.

They currently situate themselves as 2023 LMP2 champion title-contenders ahead of the final round at Road Atlanta later today, aiming to secure their fifth Team Championship title and a sixth in the Endurance Cup.

Jakub (Kuba) Śmiechowski has been confirmed as the silver-rated driver for the endurance rounds, whilst the team are currently assessing their options for a professional-bronze full-season pairing.

Sascha Fassbender, Inter Europol Competition, Team Manager, said: “PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports has proven over many years that it’s a very strong team in IMSA.

“They have won the championship, and for us, it was a logical step to work with them in an IMSA partnership.

“I am really looking forward to this journey. Our partnership with PR1 allows us to hit the ground running, and we will be competitive from the very first day.

“So, we’re delighted to confirm that we have signed with PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports owner Bobby Oergel for the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.

“Kuba will compete in the five endurance races as the Silver-graded driver. We are now talking with Pro and Bronze drivers with a view of fighting for the championship from the very start.”

Ray Mathiasen and Bobby Oergel, Team Principals for PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports, added their thoughts:

“We are delighted to welcome Inter Europol to our IMSA WeatherTech Championship LMP2 program.

“The success they have achieved, and continue to experience, is promising for our shared future.

“The collaboration between our teams opens up exciting possibilities, leveraging the strengths of both sides to achieve even greater success together.”

The 2024 season will commence at the Daytona International Speedway (Road Course) with the Roar Before the 24, followed by the 24 Hours of Daytona on 27-28 January.

Former Formula One driver Esteban Gutierrez will make his debut in endurance racing this season, joining Inter Europol Competition in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Mexican driver, who contested 59 Grands Prix with Sauber and Haas between 2013 and 2016, will partner Kuba Smiechowski and Alex Brundle aboard the team’s #34 ORECA 07-Gibson.

Gutierrez effectively replaces Renger van der Zande in the team’s line-up, with the Dutchman unable to contest a second season due to clashing IMSA commitments.

“I am pleased to join the Inter Europol Competition team for the FIA WEC 2022 season,” Gutierrez said. “A thank you to the team for the opportunity to have me race together with Kuba Smiechowski and Alex Brundle.

“With the team’s progress and our combined ambition, I am confident we will make an excellent team. Endurance racing is a new challenge for me.”

“I will focus on learning as much as possible and as soon as possible. It is an honour for me to return to racing in this competitive and prestigious series.”

Gutierrez has not raced anything other than single-seater machinery in his career. Following his departure from the Haas F1 Team at the end of 2016, the 30-year-old took part in seven IndyCar races as a stand-in for the injured Sebastien Bourdais.

He also raced in Formula E briefly and was a reserve driver with the Mercedes Formula One team until 2020, when it became apparent that he was no longer eligible for a Super License.

“We are happy to welcome Esteban to the team,” said team manager Sascha Fassbender. “I am confident that this will be a strong year for the team.”

“A thank you to Renger van de Zande who, with Alex and Kuba, worked hard last year to bring us to this level.”

“With Esteban in the team, we have a strong line-up to achieve our ambitions. I look forward to working together to accomplish great things this season.”

Alex Brundle will remain with Inter Europol Competition for both the 2022 and 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship season as the British racer has signed a multi-year contract extention with the team.

Brundle joined the team for the 2021 season, partnering up with Kuba Smiechowski and Renger van der Zande. Smiechowski has also been retained by the team, with the third driver for next year yet to be confirmed.

“I am delighted to be retained on a multi-year contract, with Inter Europol Competition, to apply my best efforts to the teams’ WEC program ongoing,” said Brundle.

“The team has demonstrated incredible progress in their performance and I’m excited to help them continue their upward trajectory towards their ambitious goals into the future.”

Smiechowski, who has been with the team for almost his entire career, is happy to continue alongside Brundle.

“I am looking forward to continuing to share the car with Alex,” he said. “I have learned a lot from him this past year, and we also share a good sense of humor.”

Brundle has been active in sportscar racing and has primarily raced LMP2 machinery for the likes of G-Drive Racing, OAK Racing, Jackie Chan DC Racing and United Autosports.

In 2016, he won the European Le Mans Series LMP3 title with the Anglo-American outfit and a year later he finished second overall at Le Mans, only behind the winning LMP1 Porsche.

“I am very pleased that we could sign a contract with Alex for the next two years and intensify our working together,” said team boss Sascha Fassbender. “He is a strong driver who has proven his performance in every race and, we are happy to be able to start the next two years in the WEC with Alex and Kuba.”
