MotoGP bound Fermin Aldeguer defeated Aron Canet in a controversial last lap shootout to take Moto2 victory at Phillip Island.

Aldeguer made a contentious move on Canet on the final lap as the SpeedUp rider took his first victory since the Sachsenring in July.

Canet got the best launch from second on the grid and was able to snatch the lead from the SpeedUp duo of Alonso Lopez and Aldeguer.

Jake Dixon was hoping to relaunch his faint championship chances but a crash at Turn 1 with Dennis Foggia saw both riders exit the race early.

The battle between the top three raged on in the first few laps, with Lopez and Canet continuing to swap positions while Aldeguer held on in third.

Gresini’s Manuel Gonzalez had the pace to run just behind the leaders, but a long lap penalty forced him to drop back into the second group.

Championship leader Ogura was the head of the chasing pack, but was pressured by home favourite Senna Agius, who was able to pass the Japanese rider in his quest for Rookie of the Year.

The battle between the top three continued, as Aldeguer took charge of the race and pulled a gap on Canet and Lopez.

Canet was desperate to respond and set new lap records of the circuit in his attempts to keep in touch with the leading SpeedUp of Aldeguer.

Alonso Lopez had dropped back from the leading duo and a mistake saw him crash out of third, promoting home hero Agius into podium contention.

Pressure from Canet forced Aldeguer into a mistake, and the Fantic rider took advantage to make his way back to the front of the race.

The SpeedUp rider would regain the position after an error from Canet, which meant that the riders would tussle for the win onto the final lap.

Aldeguer pulled a move onto Canet into MG Corner and pushed the Fantic rider wide, allowing him a free run to the line to take his first victory since the GermanGP.

Canet was visually disappointed with Aldeguer’s move and had to settle for second.

Agius took the chequered flag in third to earn his first ever grand prix podium at his home race in Australia.

Championship leader Ogura came home in fourth, narrowly ahead of Diogo Moreira and puts himself into contention to win the title in Thailand next weekend.

Gonzalez recovered from his long lap penalty to sixth after outdragging Barry Baltus to the line.

Tony Arbolino took eighth ahead of Sergio Garcia in ninth, while Marcos Ramirez rounded out the top 10.

Jeremy Alcoba was 11th after fighting off Darryn Binder and Albert Arenas.

Motegi podium finisher Filip Salac took 14th as Mario Aji concluded the points finishers in 15th.

SpeedUp’s Fermin Aldeguer backed up his MotoGP credentials by converting pole position into his first Moto2 victory of the year at Jerez after overcoming an early race battle with Gresini’s Manuel Gonzalez, who eventually succumbed to a hard-charging Joe Roberts.

Aldeguer’s winning margin was over two seconds to Roberts with Gonzalez finishing a close-run third by the time the chequered flag fell.

Aldeguer lined up on pole, joined on the front row by Gresini’s Albert Arenas and CF Moto Aspar’s Jake Dixon who was looking to get his campaign up and running after a difficult start plagued by injury and suspension issues.

Mixed conditions in Saturday’s qualifying session meant some of the championship contenders weren’t quite as advanced on the grid as they would have liked.

Second in the standings heading in was Roberts and he was down in 11th on the grid with championship leader heading into the weekend Sergio Garcia lining up in sixth.

It was tight at the start as Gonzalez stole the holeshot from the second row of the grid with Aldeguer settling behind only to take the lead at Turn 5.

Garcia had advanced to third place ahead of Dixon as Gonzalez reclaimed the lead into Turn 6 as the championship leader watched on.

On Lap 2 of 21 Garcia and Aldeguer started to scrap – the former took second into Turn 1 only for SpeedUp rider to reclaim the position at the very next corner.

Just three laps in and the top three of Gonzalez, Aldeguer and Garcia looked to break away with Dixon and Arenas squabbling over fourth place behind.

Arenas took the advantage in that regard on Lap 4 as Roberts, Diogo Moreira and Marcos Ramirez had a scrap over sixth, seventh and eighth.

Aldeguer meanwhile was posted right up on the rear wheel of Gonzalez with the pair putting a gap into third-placed Garcia.

Roberts was advancing at this stage, passing Dixon to take fifth at the start of Lap 6.

Gonzalez and Aldeguer swapped positions twice at Turns 5 and 6 in what was becoming an intriguing two-lap tussle for the lead with Garcia a semi-distant spectator.

The leading pair repeated the Turn 5/6 act once again on Lap 7 but this time Aldeguer stole the advantage in the following couple of turns with steely determination.

The charging American, aka Joe Roberts, continued to make moves, passing Arenas to take fourth with 14 laps to go and setting his sights on third-place Garcia who at this point was 1.6s up the road.

10 Laps in and Aldeguer was on a charge of his own, putting half a second between himself and Gonzalez as Dixon’s struggles continued with an off at the final corner coming onto the lap.

Roberts meanwhile was putting in lap record pace as he looked set for podium contention and perhaps even an outside bet for victory if his pace could be maintained.

Garcia in third was having scrappy moments, touching the grass on the outside exit of Turn 12 on Lap 11 and then running wide into Turn 13 on Lap 12.

Roberts didn’t need further invitation to take a top three spot and duly passed Garcia with ease on the inside of Turn 5 on Lap 13.

Two seconds covered the top three with eight laps remaining and the American Racing Team rider in third was the man with the greatest pace, but could it take him to the front?

Gonzalez had a slight wobble on Lap 14 in the final sector as he fought to keep pace with leader Aldeguer who had turned up his speed somewhat.

On Lap 18 Aldeguer looked comfortable out in front with a 1.8s advantage over Gonzalez.

A victory was out of the question for Roberts at this point, but second place was on the cards as he found himself on the back of Gonzalez and looking at a third successive runners-up finish.

On Lap 19 Roberts moved on Gonzalez into Turn 9 and the pair went into a back and forth before the American won out into Turn 11.

Aldeguer meanwhile cooly took the chequered flag, waving to the crowd as Roberts’ comeback ride was completed finely to assume the championship lead.

Gonzalez’s gutsy performance was rewarded with third as Garcia finished over four seconds back from the podium in fourth.

Arenas took a lonely fifth with MT’s Ai Ogura finishing in sixth.

Tony Arbolino finished in seventh for Marc VDS as Jeremy Alcoba, Celestino Vietti and Somkiat Chantra completed the top-10.

The lower points-scoring places were claimed by the likes of Filip Slaz in 11th with the Marc VDS rider narrowly missing out on the top-10.

Izan Guevara finished 12th, ahead of Zonta Van Den Goorbergh, Deniz Öncü and Matteo Ferrari who completed the points scoring finishers.

Roberts’ ride resulted in him assuming the championship lead with 69 points to his name with Garcia second in the standings on 64 points.

Aldeguer’s win vaulted him to third in the standings with a tally of 54 points.

Alonso Lopez batted away the advances of a charging Barry Baltus to secure victory in Qatar, while pre-season Moto2 title favorite Fermin Aldeguer failed to score.

Lopez took advantage of a poor start from pole-man Aron Canet, who dropped as low as eighth, to snatch away the initiative into the opening bend, with Gresini’s Manuel Gonzalez following him through.

His lead was short-lived though as a recovering Canet soon carved through the lead pack to re-take the lead only a few laps later, though Lopez’s patience would soon be rewarded. Canet was the first to fall victim to new intermediate-class tire supplier Pirelli’s rubber, which deteriorated much more severely than the previous Dunlop product used.

The Fantic rider started to struggle for rear grip after hitting the front, and he was soon overcome by Lopez and Gonzalez once more. Lopez continued to lead the encounter as Gonzalez eventually dropped away, though the Speed Up pilot was faced with a new threat in RW Racing’s Baltus and MT Helmet’s-MSI’s Sergio Garcia, who had kept more grip in their tires.

Lopez looked to be fading as Baltus ranged ever closer, the Belgian ace prodding for an opening as the lap counter ticked down. He looked to find a way through as the duo started the final lap, though Lopez put his Boscoscuro machine in all the right places to prevent Baltus from finding an opening.

Try as he might, Baltus was unable to stage an attack on Lopez, allowing him to take the chequered flag and win by just 0.055s. The runners-up spot still marked Baltus’ and the RW squad’s maiden Moto2 podium finish, his previous best being sixth.

Garcia meanwhile started to run out of grip over the last couple of tours and dropped away from the lead battle, though still claimed third to grab his first-ever rostrum result ahead of team-mate Ai Ogura. Gonzalez ended up fading to fifth, the Gresini man narrowly hanging on from a charging Marcos Ramirez.

The American Racing rider fell to as low as 17th in the early stages as he prioritized keeping his tires in good shape. His decision paid off handsomely across the second half of the encounter as he scythed through the pack to sixth, the Spaniard by far the fastest man on track to end up just five seconds from victory.

His team-mate Joe Roberts was seventh ahead of the other Gresini entry of Albert Arenas, while Ajo’s Celestino Vietti snatched ninth from a struggling Canet on the run to the line.

Pre-season championship tip Aldeguer meanwhile had a horrible evening in Qatar, the Speed Up man making a poor start and dropping to 14th. He later recovered to ninth, but later fell back once more as he seemingly destroyed his rubber. Ajo rookie cemented his pain by stealing away the final point for 15th at the death, leaving 2023 Qatar winner Aldeguer only 16th.

Marc VDS also had a tough evening under the Qatari lights, Tony Arbolino dropping back throughout the contest to eventually take 20th just ahead of new team-mate Filip Salac.

CFMoto’s Sergio Garcia capped off a tough weekend for the Aspar Moto2 team by retiring in the pits with a mechanical issue just past mid-distance. This followed team-mate Jake Dixon being ruled out of the rest of the weekend due to a nasty crash in final practice, though the Brit looks likely to be back for the next round in Portugal.

Fermin Aldeguer cruised to a fourth straight Moto2 win to end his campaign in commanding style, the Speed Up man sealing third overall in the rider’s standings as a result.

Aldeguer made a rapid start to jump pole man Aron Canet to snatch away the leadership, the Spaniard swiftly trying to break his pursuers by posting the fastest lap on the third tour.

Canet did his level best to challenge Aldeguer in the opening stages as he looked to secure his first intermediate class win, as well as his Pons outfit’s last as it waves goodbye to the grand prix paddock after an illustrious history across the three series after this weekend.

His hopes of a fairytale victory eventually faded though as Aldeguer started to stretch ever further away, Canet falling over three seconds adrift of the lead by the time two-thirds distance had been reached.

Continuing the metronomic form he has shown in the final races of 2023, Aldeguer managed things to perfection out front to eventually cross the line for a fifth win of the year by 3.9 seconds. His success also lifted him to third in the standings, as rival for the spot Jake Dixon could manage only sixth on Sunday.

Canet at least managed to give Pons a rostrum result on its swansong, while the other Speed Up entry of Alonso Lopez completed the podium following an impressive comeback.

Lopez launched from 14th on the grid to end the second tour challenging for a top-five spot, pushing 2023 Moto2 champion Pedro Acosta out at Turn 4. He later pulled the same aggressive move on Dixon as well as American Racing’s Marcos Ramirez to claim third.

Ramirez was keen to add a second rostrum finish of the year to his CV though and managed to come back at Lopez as the race neared its conclusion as he had preserved his rubber more effectively. Ramirez stalked his prey and eventually dived down the inside of Lopez at the final corner on the last lap, though failed to achieve a good enough exit and lost the spot once more by just 0.021s.

Honda Team Asia’s Somkiat Chantra completed the top five meanwhile, the Indonesian ace getting the better of Dixon as the GasGas rider faded in the latter stages.

Sam Lowes finished his final Moto2 outing before moving to the World Superbike Championship on a positive note by claiming seventh for Marc VDS, while Joe Roberts led home Italtrans team-mate Dennis Foggia for ninth.

Albert Arenas meanwhile got the better of MotoGP-bound team-mate Acosta to round off the top ten, the latter never recovering from getting beaten up in the middling stages of the encounter to end his title-winning campaign with his equal-worst result of the year in 12th.

The opening lap saw a nasty crash eliminate Izan Guevara, Sergio Garcia, and Celestino Vietti, with Garcia getting run over by Guevara’s machine. The Pons man fortunately walked away from the incident, as did the other riders involved.

Kohta Nozane also went down on the opening lap at the final turn, but the Yamaha VR46 Master Camp pilot also walked away without injury.

Fermin Aldeguer battled back from a tough opening few laps to secure a third-successive Moto2 win in Qatar to close further in on a championship podium place.

Aldeguer made a good start to move into third from fourth on the grid off the start, though his task for his fourth win of the year was made harder after he ran wide on entry to Turn 1 soon after.

With his mistake dropping him back to ninth, the Speed Up rider was forced to carve back through the pack to reach the lead. He quickly obliged as he reached the podium positions just before mid-distance, before swiftly passing Jake Dixon for the runners-up spot.

He then took just a further lap to run down and pass Aron Canet for the leadership, the Spaniard immediately turning up the wick as he hit the front.

He relentlessly pulled clear of his rivals across the remainder of the contest to eventually take the chequered flag 2.1 seconds clear of Manuel Gonzalez, who finally secured a long-awaited first Moto2 rostrum.

The Yamaha VR46 Master Camp rider stalked the leading group across the opening half of the race before electing to strike as Aldeguer worked his way through. He first moved clear of Dixon before then passing Canet.

Gonzalez was forced to hold off the Pons racer on the final circulation though as he staged a last-gasp attack, Canet diving through at Turn 4 before Gonzalez crossed him back over.

Canet then dived through at the final bend to try and grab second, though Gonzalez once again achieved superior momentum to secure the spot by just 0.009s.

Ai Ogura meanwhile came out on top of a frenetic battle with Dixon to secure fourth, the duo swapping positions several times on the last lap before the Honda Team Asia man got the better of the GasGas pilot on the run to the line.

Celestino Vietti struggled to match his qualifying form and ended up sixth ahead of Somkiat Chantra, while freshly crowned Moto2 world champion Pedro Acosta brought his Ajo-run machine home eighth having struggled throughout.

Alonso Lopez was ninth on the other Speed Up entry, while Tony Arbolino completed the top ten for Marc VDS.

Pole-man Joe Roberts looked strong in the early laps, though eventually faded back to 11th by the time he crossed the line after 18 laps – the American narrowly holding off a charging Sam Lowes. The Brit dropped back to 18th from the second row early on, though he looked after his rubber well to recover ground, even posting the fastest lap of the race on the last tour.

With the top two spots in the championship already decided, the focus is now on the tussle between Dixon, Aldeguer, and Canet in next weekend’s season finale in Valencia for the final spot on the championship rostrum. Dixon now holds a reduced seven-point advantage over Aldeguer, with Canet a further 12 points adrift.

Fermin Aldeguer cruised to a second straight Moto2 victory at the Sepang International Circuit in commanding fashion, while Pedro Acosta secured the rider’s title with two races to spare.

Aldeguer lost the lead to Yamaha Master Camp’s Manuel Gonzalez off the start, though managed to level him through Turn 1. Aldeguer made contact with the Spaniard exiting the bend though which sent him to the floor while the Speed Up man regained the lead.

From this point on Aldeguer checked out from the rest of the field, pulling around a second a lap on Acosta in the opening laps to craft a solid advantage.

Having escaped penalty for his part in the incident with Ramirez, Aldeguer remained untroubled for the remainder of the encounter as he expertly preserved his rubber to take the chequered flag 7.1 seconds clear of Acosta to grab a third win of the season.

It would be Acosta who secured the ultimate prize by finishing second though, as with Marc VDS’ Tony Arbolino suffering a tough outing en route to 10th, Acosta’s runners-up result wrapped up the 2023 title with two races to spare as he extended his points gap over the Italian to an unassailable 79.

Acosta’s title came off the back of 14 rostrum results from the 18 races contested so far this season, including a total of seven victories to ensure he will step up to the GasGas MotoGP squad in 2024 as the reigning intermediate class champion.

The tussle for the final spot of the rostrum was more hotly contested, as American Racing’s Marcos Ramirez desperately tried to hang onto a maiden podium result ahead of a charging Ai Ogura in the closing laps.

Ramirez had held the spot right from the outset of the encounter, though had begun to run out of tire later on, allowing Ogura to close right in.

The Honda Team Asia racer – who took advantage of the craziness at Turn 1 on the first lap to move from 15th on the grid to sixth exiting the bend – pressed Ramirez as he tried to find a way through on the very final lap.

Ramirez was determined to finally stand on the rostrum though and held firm to secure third ahead of Ogura, while GasGas’ Jake Dixon snatched away fifth from the other Speed Up of Alonso Lopez on the final lap.

Having already dropped outside the top five, Lopez then crashed out just a few corners from home. This allowed the other Honda Team Asia entry of Somkiat Chantra to claim sixth ahead of MarcVDS’ Sam Lowes.

Joe Roberts was eighth for Italtrans ahead of KTM Ajo’s Albert Arenas, as Arbolino took advantage of Lopez’s problems to salvage a top-ten result despite his earlier mishap.

Several front runners failed to make the finish, including Aron Canet who challenged within the top five in the early laps. He dropped to 14th after serving a long-lap penalty for crashing under yellow flags in qualifying, but later crashed out while trying to recover positions.

His Pons team-mate Sergio Garcia also later went down while fighting within the top ten, while Fantic Racing’s Celestino Vietti fell victim to Turn 9 while running fourth.

Fermin Aldeguer cruised to a second career Moto2 win in commanding fashion as he defeated Pedro Acosta in the Thai Grand Prix, who edged closer to securing the title.

Pole-man Aldeguer enjoyed a good start to keep the lead off the line ahead of the series leader, and swiftly began to build up a lead in the early laps.

He soon pulled out over a second over Acosta to escape the slipstream range of the two long straights that make up the first sector of the Chang International Circuit, the Speed Up racer continually edging away from his pursuer.

Having built up a lead of over three seconds by the time the encounter hit two-thirds distance, Aldeguer suffered a small panic moment after running wide at the final bend, an error which cost him a second to Acosta.

He soon managed to regain his composure and started to pull away once again, the Spaniard eventually taking the chequered flag by 3.4 seconds over Acosta to secure his second career win after scoring victory at Silverstone earlier this year.

Acosta’s quiet run to second moved him a step closer to securing this year’s Moto2 rider’s title however, the Ajo KTM pilot extending his points advantage to 63 over Marc VDS’ Tony Arbolino with only 75 left to play for this season after the Italian could only manage fourth in Thailand.

Home hero Somkiat Chantra meanwhile secured a popular podium finish after coming home a solid third for Honda Team Asia.

Arbolino needed to finish at least 15th to keep his championship hopes alive with Acosta second, and despite struggling to stay within the top ten early on he was able to fight back through to fourth to keep his now remote chances going until Malaysia in two weeks time.

Ai Ogura meanwhile enjoyed a battling encounter to recover from 19th on the grid to complete the top five on the sister Honda Team Asia entry, the Japanese pilot getting the better of American Racing’s Marcos Ramirez in the closing stages. Sixth was still Ramirez’s best result of the year though.

Albert Arenas was seventh on his Ajo KTM machine ahead of the other Speed Up of Alonso Lopez, while GasGas’ Izan Guevara managed to steal ninth from Manuel Gonzalez on the final lap after the VR46 Master Camp rider made an error.

Aron Canet narrowly missed out on a top ten result in 11th after the Pons racer had to serve a double long-lap penalty for a jump start, the Spaniard aided by several riders crashing out in front of him.

Jake Dixon – Canet’s main rival for third in the championship – went down after running into the side of Celestino Vietti after out braking himself at Turn 2, the Brit high siding and retiring on the spot. The resulting loss of time put Vietti under pressure from Arbolino, and the Italian ran wide at Turn 5 and crashed out himself from sixth.

Joe Roberts lost out on the opportunity of a top ten after crashing his Italtrans-prepared bike after just a few laps, while Sergio Garcia also went down from tenth at Turn 5 approaching mid-distance.

Alonso Lopez eased to a second Moto2 win of 2022 at Phillip Island despite having to serve an early long-lap penalty, while Augusto Fernandez crashed to cede the points lead.

Lopez made a lightning start from third on the grid to snatch away the leadership in the early meters of the Australian Grand Prix, the Speed Up racer immediately crafting a 1.7 second advantage in just two laps in anticipation of his long-lap punishment he was awarded prior to the race for irresponsible riding in Friday’s opening practice session.

Having bolted to a near three-second lead by the time he took his penalty on the fourth tour, Lopez managed to hang onto the lead and quickly resumed his demolition of the field.

He enjoyed a gap as high as 4.5 seconds across the remaining laps over KTM Ajo’s Pedro Acosta before ultimately taking the chequered flag in dominant style by just over 3.5 seconds ahead of the reigning Moto3 world champion.

Acosta looked to be in for an entertaining battle with team-mate and championship leader Fernandez as the latter stalked his young countryman, though disaster struck just past half-distance as he seemingly carried a little too much speed into Turn 2 in the tow of Acosta – losing the front of his machine and crashing out as a result.

His non-score would allow title rival Ai Ogura a get-out-of-jail-free card due to the Japanese rider struggling once again for speed in the race having qualified a lowly 13th, the Honda Team Asia man taking 11th after profiting from several crashes ahead of his throughout the race – thus affording him a 3.5 point lead in the series with just two races left to run.

Jake Dixon meanwhile managed to pick up the pieces of Fernandez’s potentially crucial error to complete the rostrum positions, the GasGas pilot pulling off an impressive comeback ride from 14th on the grid to third having lapped at a similar pace to the two leaders once in clear air.

The sister Speed Up entry of pole-man Fermin Aldeguer came home fourth after passing a fading Cameron Beaubier at the death, the Spaniard struggling for performance in the early stages before charging back through in the closing laps.

Manuel Gonzalez meanwhile matched his best result of the year in fifth on his Yamaha Master Camp-run bike, with Jeremy Alcoba doing likewise for Intact GP in sixth.

Beaubier ended up slipping to seventh having challenged Dixon for a large part of the race for third, the American heading Somkiat Chantra and Aron Canet home, while Bo Bensneyder rounded off the top ten for the SAG squad.

Tony Arbolino saw an early podium push ended with a fast crash at Turn 8 while running second after just over half-a-dozen circulations, while Filip Salac and Celestino Vietti both saw top six results go to waste with crashes of their own at Turns 1 and 6 respectively around mid-distance.

Alonso Lopez cruised to a maiden Moto2 victory at Misano having led every lap, while title contender Celestino Vietti suffered his second crash in as many races.

Lopez made a lightning start to immediately sling-shot past pole-man Vietti on the run to Turn 1 before swiftly building up a lead over GasGas’ Albert Arenas, who also managed to slip past the VR46 rider.

The Spaniard was never headed past this point as he controlled proceedings out in front, his only real challenge coming in the shape of Pons racer Canet who briefly looked like he could run Lopez down before the leader began to stretch his legs once more.

Lopez ultimately took the chequered flag at the head of the field for the first time by 1.6 seconds ahead of Canet, while Augusto Fernandez wrestled the series lead back from Ai Ogura after getting the better of Arenas for third in the closing laps.

Arenas began to struggle for grip as the race entered its climactic stages and did everything he could to hold off the Ajo pilot to score a maiden intermediate class rostrum, though it wasn’t to be and he was forced to settle for fourth ahead of Ogura, who came home a distant fifth.

Pedro Acosta recovered from 13th on the grid to take sixth ahead of Tony Arbolino’s Marc VDS-run Kalex, with Somkiat Chantra eighth on the sister Honda Team Asia entry.

Joe Roberts was ninth for Italtrans while the top ten was completed by Jeremy Alcoba, who profited from a long-lap penalty for Intact GP team-mate Marcel Schrotter.

Vietti was the main casualty of a race hit by severe attrition, the VR46 man crashing at Turn 4 while running fourth – a second straight DNF that sees him slip to 41 points adrift of Fernandez with only six races remaining.

GasGas duo Jake Dixon and Mattia Pasini also failed to see the chequered flag after crashing out, the former going down at Turn 2 on the opening lap while the latter came unstuck at Turn 4 while running well in the top ten just past mid-distance.

The second Speed Up entry of Fermin Aldeguer also failed to see the finish after the Spaniard went down at Turn 1 from seventh early on.

Fernandez holds a four point advantage over Ogura, while Canet moves into third at the behest of Vietti to the tune of just a single point.
