Scott Dixon finished in second place for the opening round of IndyCar’s 2025 season, but he was still unhappy after the race was over.

The veteran revealed after his podium celebrations were complete that he had run nearly the entire race with no radio communication.

Instead of managing the 100-lap event through constant communication with his engineer, Dixon was forced to use his vast experience to manage his own race while sitting behind the wheel.

With only one early caution period to dictate strategy, he simply waited until his car was nearly out of fuel to complete each pit stop. He discovered that pitting one or two laps early would have gained him precious seconds and potentially fight for the win.

“Yeah, no radio for the entire race,” said Dixon. “It was kind of tough just to see what we were doing, mileage-wise. Once the first caution happened, it was going to be a strict kind of two-stopper.

“Kind of worked on the warm-up laps and kind of for the first 10 and that was about it, but ultimately cost us the race, with not coming in when I should have.

“You have a fuel light so you can run — you know when the car is going to run out. I didn’t know if they could hear me, so I was just telling them I’m just go to run to the light and see what happens. Ultimately I think for me, it was just one lap too long.

“We caught that traffic with about five or six cars and lost about two or three seconds on that in lap, so that was a bit of a nightmare.

“Yeah, I don’t know. Car was good. I think pit stops were really good. I think all around, we had good speed. Anytime that we had clean air, we could definitely stretch out, but spent most of the race in dirty air.

“It’s kind of the first time I’ve ever done a whole race without a radio, so that was interesting. Glad we got some good points and a nice one, too, for the team.”

If Dixon had any fewer than 25 years of experience, his dilemma could well have cost him more. Securing a podium despite the situation would make nearly any other driver happy.

But all Dixon could think about was the win that got away.

“I’m pretty pissed off. We had a good race going and we didn’t get it done. So it doesn’t feel good, that’s for sure.”

The first race of the 2025 NTT IndyCar Series season took place on Sunday with the traditional streets of St. Petersburg hosting the exciting series for the 21st time.

In what has become a recurring theme, Alex Palou ran an error-free race that allowed him to claim victory from an eighth place starting position.

Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden rounded out the podium, with each driver battling through issues that prevented them from taking the top spot for themselves.

The wildest moment of the race took place on the very first lap, with Will Power, Nolan Siegel, and rookie Louis Foster all tangling as they attempted to get through Turn 3. The trio of drivers were all forced to retire on the spot.

Teams did all they could to utilize the softer tire compound Firestone brought this weekend, but it ended up degrading too quickly and few were able to stay on them for longer than 10 laps.

The next race on the IndyCar calendar takes place in three weeks’ time, with a tilt around The Thermal Club on the docket.

The first race of the 2025 IndyCar season took place on Sunday afternoon under picture perfect skies on the shores of St. Petersburg, Florida.

27 drivers took the green flag, including two racing for the series’ newest team PREMA. But only one driver was able to take victory at the end of the 100-lap event.

In what is a recurring theme in IndyCar, Alex Palou was able to put on a clinic and took victory to open the season.

His methodical driving skills allowed him to take care of his tires better than his competitors, and he used the strength that was left in his car to fend off a charging Josef Newgarden in the closing laps despite lapped traffic causing issues.

Despite looking like he was going to challenge for the win in the final 10 laps, Josef Newgarden dropped off the pace dramatically in the final lap.

He revealed after the race that he had fuel miscues, which caused his pit box to call him over the radio with instructions to back way off the pace so he could make it to the finish line.

Newgarden’s sudden ‘emergency mode’ call allowed Scott Dixon to overtake him and claim the second spot on the podium.

Newgarden was disappointed with the execution of race strategy. Photo: Kevin Dejewski

Dixon ran the entire race with no radio communication, and he felt that he could have secured the victory himself if he were able to pit at the optimal times.

The fuel miscalculation and radio troubles were the small details that ultimately determined the order of the podium in a close battle.

Early trouble

The race was barely underway before a large incident brought out the full course yellow.

As the field of 27 drivers roared through the first couple turns, track space became a premium and cars began bumping off one another.

By Turn 3, it all came to a head. Nolan Siegel had to check up for traffic ahead and was run into by Will Power.

Both drivers spun into the wall hard, with rookie Louis Foster also spinning amid the chaos as the rest of the field attempted to avoid the chaos.

All three drivers were forced to retire on the spot, having completed zero laps in the 2025 season.

The early caution meant that drivers who started on the soft compound were able to pit on the third lap to get rid of the inferior tires. All but nine drivers took the opportunity, leading to split strategies for the remainder of the race.

Close racing was the norm for the entire afternoon. Photo: Kevin Dejewski

Once the green flags flew for a second time, the race continued without interruption for the rest of the event.

A few drivers attempted to make the soft Guayule Firestone tires last 30 laps, splitting the 100-lap race into roughly three equal parts.

That strategy did not work well, however, and they all had to come in again to change tires less than 10 laps later.

Pato O’Ward stayed on the soft tires longer than any other driver, 20 laps on a single stint. It is even more surprising that he was able to climb through the field as quickly as he did.

The young star began the race in 23rd, but worked his way up to 11th by the checkered flag. O’Ward was the most improved driver on the day.

Drivers return to the track in three weeks when the series visits The Thermal Club for a points-paying round at the luxurious club track.

Sunday’s IndyCar race from The Milwaukee Mile, the second race in as many days, allowed one of IndyCar’s all-time greats to secure another impressive record to his name.

Scott Dixon, who is affectionately known as The Iceman, finished in second place and claimed the 142nd podium result of his 24-plus year long career.

The astonishing number moves him ahead of another all-time great Mario Andretti, giving him the most podium finishes of any driver in series history.

As with other achievements that Dixon has earned over his career, the 44-year-old was humble while learning about his achievement.

“Yeah, it’s cool,” said Dixon when informed of his new record. “Obviously Mario, I’m a massive fan of Mario. He’s a huge part of our series. Again, I keep saying it, but it’s so cool that him and A.J. [Foyt] and many others, whether it’s Rick [Mears], come to a lot of our races.

“Obviously Mario raced in a lot of different categories, as well, and achieved many great things. Just to be mentioned with any of those guys is very special.”

Dixon’s podium on Sunday was his fifth of the season, allowing him to close up and take the record for himself as quickly as he has done throughout his career.

Among the various impressive records that are listed in Dixon’s name is the one that notes he has won at least one IndyCar race for 20 consecutive years and counting.

The veteran has been asked many times over recent years if he plans to retire soon, but his answer is never definitive and he continues to keep racing at the highest of levels.

As long as he keeps performing at the top of his game, he continues to see no need do anything other than keep racking up more and more records.

Jake Dixon secured victory during the 2024 Aragon Moto2 Grand Prix as part of the 12th round in the 2024 schedule.

The British rider converted his pole position into his second win of the year as he withstood great pressure all throughout the 19-lap race.

At lights out, Dixon kept his pole position but only narrowly ahead of Tony Arbolino who took second place from Diogo Moreira.

Aron Canet had a disastrous start having not been able to take opportunity of his front row grid spot, although it was SpeedUp Racing’s Fermin Aldeguer who asserted a brilliant getaway.

The Spaniard started 11th yet quickly climbed to second before falling back one position on his Boscoscuro bike, before settling in fifth ahead of his teammate Alonso Lopez.

Arbolino kept Dixon under pressure in the battle for the lead with the pair setting similar lap times.

Italtrans Racing Team rider Moreira was equally under the spotlight as he fended off Lopez, though not before the Spaniard overtook the Italian into third place.

The lead fight continued to heat up between Dixon and Arbolino who were in a different league in terms of lap times, having distanced themselves at 2.5 seconds on Lopez with six laps remaining.

KTM Ajo’s Deniz Oncu made his move into third place with five laps to go after keeping the chase up on Lopez for the final spot on the podium.

Dixon kept up the pace in the 1-minute 52-margin on lap times and so in the final two laps, he managed to crawl away from Arbolino and secure his second victory of the 2024 season.

As Arbolino took second, Oncu claimed third in the #53 bike.

Lopez finished in fourth position ahead of Manuel Gonzalez and Somkiat Chantra.

Seventh position was taken by Marcos Ramirez ahead of Ai Ogura, and Darryn Binder.

Celestino Vietti rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP team.

The NTT IndyCar Series has announced grid penalties for four drivers ahead of this weekend’s Bommarito 500 from World Wide Technology Raceway.

The drivers include championship contenders Alex Palou and Scott Dixon, who currently sit first and third in the title race.

The #51 of Katherine Legge will also drop down below her qualifying position, as will Felix Rosenqvist in the #60 Meyer Shank Racing entry.

All four drivers will drop nine positions on account of using too many engines across the season.

All four drivers also use Honda power plants, which puts the manufacturer at a further disadvantage where Team Penske and Chevrolet have been tough to beat lately on oval courses

The penalties stem from premature engine replacement earlier in the year, specifically during the two weeks of running for the Indianapolis 500.

Honda was forced to replace more than its share of engines while focusing on performance for that race, and is now paying the price in the form of grid penalties.

The penalties are stronger on ovals than on road courses to help balance the strength of the penalty. If the penalties had come on a road course, each driver would only drop six positions instead of nine.

Last year’s winner Dixon started 16th during that event, so he will need to pull off a similar drive through the field if he is to repeat as the winner at Gateway.

There are four races on the schedule after this weekend’s event at WWTR, and more penalties are likely as other entries have to take more than their allocated number of engines.

Jake Dixon pulled off a last-lap masterclass to defeat Aron Canet to win the Moto2 race at his home British Grand Prix.

The duo rode to perfection as the two built a strong seven-second lead over the rest of the field in a truly dominant display.

Pole sitter Ai Ogura rocket shipped off the line aboard his MT Helmets to lead the majority of the opening lap of the race.

Canet then made an aggressive move to lead proceedings at the end of the first lap, with Ogura under threat from Dixon.

Hometown favourite Dixon elevated from fifth to third before mustering an audacious move on Ogura to take second to the delight of the crowd at Copse corner on Lap 2.

Joe Roberts darted past Ogura to position his American Racing Team bike in the final podium spots. Ogura sustained a better line on entry to the back straight to reclaim track position.

Pertamina Mandalika Gas Up Team rider Jaume Masia race ended on the fast Turn 14 on Lap 2.

Marc VDS rider Tony Arbolino ran wide at the back straight at Turn 6 and could not get it stopped resulting in a fall on the gravel traps, putting him out of proceedings altogether.

Roberts attempted another move on Ogura, but once more, the Japanese star reclaimed the third spot at Turn 6.

Roberts sat back for the remainder of the lap and seized an opportunistic move at the end of the Hangar, this time making it stick.

Ogura fell down to fifth following a move on Diogo Moreira on the start-finish straight before the Brazilian rookie later losing control of his bike which ended his race on Lap 6.

Big names Somkiat Chantra and Joe Roberts followed in the gravel trap in Lap 6 and Lap 7 respectively, which put Gresini’s Alberto Arenas into the final podium spot.

Both Canet and Dixon stretched out a four second lead over the rest of the field, with the final spot on the podium all to play for.

Championship leader Sergio Garcia qualified in 16th before claiming seven spots to ninth by the halfway stage.

The Gresini duo of Arenas and Manuel Gonzalez pulled out a lead over the next pack of riders, featuring Darryn Bonder, Ogura, Celestino Vietti and Garcia.

Mario Aji made a monumental highside at Turn 7 on Lap 10 while sitting inside the top ten positions.

Canet and CFMoto’s Dixon’s rapid showing of pace continued with the duo boasting a seven-second advantage at the top, but Dixon looked poised to eye up a move for the win in the closing laps.

Gonzalez overtook his team-mate Arenas to put himself third ahead of Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP rider Binder, with a Garcia resurgence on the horizon.

The championship leader gained a further three places to place himself in sixth spot, but can sense a podium place in his grasp.

Elsewhere, 2025 Ducati rider Fermin Aldeguer suffered all weekend, showing far off the standards of his ability as he was placed in the final points-scoring positions with four laps to go.

Garcia overtook Binder at Copse corner to mount that last grasp podium, whereas his team-mate Ogura had gone backwards over the course of the race and fell down to 13th.

Garcia lunged passed Gonzalez on the third to final lap with Vietti following suit on the start-finish straight.

With Vietti appearing more comfortable, he forged his way past the Spaniard on the second last lap.

Out ahead on the last lap, Dixon found a way through Canet and sped off in the distance in the first half of the lap.

Canet tried to find a gap in the second section of the race, but Dixon pulled off a masterclass in looking after the tyres till the very end.

This win marks his first win at Silverstone since joining Moto2, with Canet featuring on the rostrum for a second time this season.

Red Bull’s Vietti rounded off the podium spots ahead of MT Helmets Garcia who recovered from 16th to finish fourth.

Gresini rider Gonzalez defied a late charge from Binder to take fifth, with Jeremy Alcoba finishing in seventh.

Arenas dropped back to eighth following an early charge, with Alonso Lopez enduring a quiet race that put him ninth.

Senna Agius rounded off the top ten, fending off a late battle with Zonta van den Goorbergh and Aldeguer.

Bo Bendsneyder was able to bring back home points for his Pertamina Mandalika Gas Up Team following his team-mates crash, with pole-sitter Ogura finishing all the way back in 14th.

Marcos Ramirez produced solace for the American Racing Team after his team-mate and championship contender Roberts crashed out of proceedings, with the Spanish rider claiming the final point.

The NTT IndyCar Series held a race on the streets of Detroit this weekend, and it was filled with chaos and crashes throughout the entirety of the 100 laps.

Scott Dixon once again showed he is the master of fuel saving, stretching his fuel longer than nearly everyone else to take his second race win of the 2024 season.

Marcus Ericsson and Marcus Armstrong filled out the podium, with Honda power spoiling the party in Chevrolet’s marquee event.

Nearly every driver was involved in at least one incident throughout the day. In total, there were eight caution periods totaling an incredible 47 out of the 100 total laps.

Yet another race is scheduled for next weekend, giving teams no time to recover from this chaotic event. They will gather at historic Road America for a run through the scenic countryside.

IndyCar romped around the streets of Detroit this weekend, and it was filled to the brim with excitement.

The very first corner of the race saw the event’s first caution when Will Power was punted into the barriers and was collected by a few other drivers.

That incident set the tone for the remainder of the race, but there were a few green flag laps near the end of the event which allowed some genuine racing to take place.

Scott Dixon once again showed that he is the absolute master of fuel saving by running the final 44 laps on one tank of Shell gasoline.

Only one other driver was able to make it that distance, Dixon’s Chip Ganassi Racing team-mate Marcus Armstrong, and he ran out of fuel on the cool down lap.

Dixon’s win boosts him into the points lead, and makes him the first repeat winner of the 2024 IndyCar season.

Marcus Ericsson took second place, his best result of the season. He was relieved to have some good luck after an admittedly horrible Month of May.

The aforementioned Armstrong finished on the podium for the first time, climbing from 19th to secure his best result so far just over a year into his IndyCar career.

Part of his ability to climb so far in the standings was due to the sheer number of cautions that interrupted the race.

There were so many incidents that barely any drivers avoided the chaos, and multiple drivers were involved in multiple crashes.

Josef Newgarden, Colton Herta, Romain Grosjean, Scott McLaughlin and many others were responsible for the numerous caution periods, leading to a hefty repair bill for their teams.

Most of the incidents came in the braking zones, as drivers consistently misjudged how late they could dive into the corners.

There were an incredible number of penalties handed out by race control as well, with 12 different penalties being levied for over-aggression and service in a closed pit.

Two of the caution periods were due to a very brief rain shower and moved over the track near the halfway point.

Everyone came to pit lane to take on rain tires, but then returned to pit lane to take the rain tires off again just a couple laps later as the rain moved out just as quickly as it arrived.

Will Power, who was involved in the first lap crash, was also served four separate penalties for various infractions.

Despite that, the veteran was able to work his way back up to sixth, two positions higher than he started.

His two Team Penske team-mates had their bad luck later on in the race, and were not able to recover in the same way.

McLaughlin was stuck a lap down after his slide into the tires, and Newgarden bent his suspension while trying to make up for a couple collisions earlier on. The drivers finished 20th and 26th respectively.

With only a couple days until the next race for teams to make repairs, there is no rest for the already weary paddock.

Next week’s race takes place at the historic Road America, a track that is very different from the tight and bumpy Detroit streets.

Carb Day practice was completed on Friday morning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, serving as the final on-track session ahead of the big race on Sunday.

The track was incredibly busy for the entire two hour session, and at times it looked like a full race was taking place.

Drivers were diving past each other in every corner of the track, running in packs, practicing passing, and generally getting a feel for their cars in dirty air.

The fastest driver of the final practice was Scott Dixon, who set a lap of 227.206 MPH early on in the running.

The six-time champion, and one-time Indy 500 winner, completed 90 laps and looked really comfortable behind the wheel.

Four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves set the second fastest lap, with Pato O’Ward just a hair slower in third.

Colton Herta set the fourth fastest time, and related that his Andretti Global entry continued to feel just as fast and stable as it did at the start of practice last week.

There was one caution for Kyle Larson, who ran out of fuel half a lap before he planned to make one of many practice pit stops.

After getting a tow into his pit box from the safety crew, the NASCAR star and all the other drivers were able to get back out for the final few minutes of the session.

Santino Ferrucci had a less than ideal final practice session, as his AJ Foyt Chevy was well off the pace as soon as he went out on track.

His crew pushed the car back to the garage area after completing only nine laps to troubleshoot the issue. Ferrucci was back on track 30 minutes later, but was again pushed to the garage for even more adjustments.

Multiple other drivers were also surprised to find that their cars were not working as well as they had been over the past week.

Christian Lundgaard and Alexander Rossi were both much less comfortable than they were in previous running, and they were far from the only ones with work to do before the race.

Overall, there were a massive 2,721 laps turned by the entire field, and Graham Rahal was on track most of all with 106 laps completed in his #15 RLL Honda

There is no more practice to be run, however, and any adjustments needed will have to be made from the data that has been gathered already.

The 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to get underway just after noon Eastern time, although rain is forecast and has the potential to delay the race until Monday if it is heavy enough.
