Haas suffered a difficult start to the 2025 Formula 1 season after finishing at the bottom of the timing sheets in both Friday practice sessions at the Australian Grand Prix.

Haas played its cards close to its chest in pre-season testing, committing to high-fuel run plans and avoiding quali sims, a tactic that paid dividends last year.

Speaking on Thursday, Esteban Ocon was in good spirits heading into the Australian Grand Prix, noting that Haas had discovered issues in testing but had a clear path.

“I think our first two days of the test, we felt very good with the car,” Ocon told select media including Motorsport Week.

“It was very solid, I was happy with it.

“The last day was a bit more difficult for us. We know exactly where we have to improve straight away and where the strong point of the car is.

“It is very clear to us, which is a very good thing. From the first day, we’ve managed to put the finger on where we needed to improve, and that’s good.”

Despite the former Alpine driver remaining confident, the cracks began to appear for Haas in Australia.

First, Oliver Bearman crashed heavily during FP1 as he lost control of his VF-25 into the gravel trap before careering into the barriers.

The British driver wasn’t able to return to the track with his Haas car, requiring repairs, and he missed the second practice session as the team was forced to change the gearbox and engine due to extensive damage.

Ocon didn’t fare any better on the other side of the garage, finishing 19th in both Frdiay sessions, as it became apparent the Banbury-based squad had not managed to improve in the areas previously mentioned by the Frenchman.

Haas chief reflects on ‘pretty difficult day’

Team Principal Ayao Komatsu admitted that he was left surprised by the team’s showing on Friday.

“Today was a pretty difficult day; it wasn’t the performance we were expecting,” Komatsu said.

“We have one indication as to why in FP1, but Ollie crashed, so we couldn’t completely get to the bottom of why we were uncompetitive.

“So we need to make another step tonight and then do the best we can tomorrow.”

After missing out on crucial track time, Bearman offered an explanation as to why he suffered a huge shunt on the streets of Melbourne.

“It wasn’t a case of feeling, honestly,” he said.

“The feeling was good, I think just wanting a bit too much too soon.

“It is just kind of my approach isn’t the right one for F1.

“In F2, you go straight to quali after the first practice session; in F1 you have two more [practice sessions].

“So there’s no need to be straight on the limit.”

Ocon, however, was once again looking on the bright side as he felt Haas had made strides forward after the opening day.

“We did a really good step from FP1 to FP2,” the 28-year-old explained.

“Yes, it doesn’t look shiny on the timing page, that’s very true, but the car improved quite well from FP1 to FP2.

“There are still some things that we know we can find, and there is margin for us to improve.”

Given the absence of qualifying runs in testing, it remains to be seen whether Friday was a true indicator of Haas’ underlying pace, or a sign of more troubles to come.

No doubt the squad will be looking to bounce back in qualifying.

Esteban Ocon has opened up on the initial shock he experienced with the Ferrari engine at Haas

Esteban Ocon has recounted how he experienced an “initial shock” when he first drove a Formula 1 car with a Ferrari engine during his debut outing with Haas.

Ocon is embarking on a new chapter in his career in 2025 having elected to bring an end his extensive association with Alpine prior to signing a multi-term deal with Haas.

Among the notable changes Ocon has had to adapt to since his move is the Ferrari powertrain compared to the Mercedes and Renault units that he’d been accustomed to.

The Frenchman has admitted that provided a surprise when he conducted his inaugural run with Haas in the squad’s 2024-spec VF-24 in the post-season test in Abu Dhabi.

But although he wouldn’t be drawn on the contrasts between the respective engines, Ocon highlighted that there are “positive” elements to the Italian marque’s powertrain.

“Yeah, of course there are differences,” Ocon told media including Motorsport Week during pre-season testing in Bahrain.

“I’m not going to comment about the differences itself, but there’s a lot of positives with the Ferrari power units and initially it’s a very different way of using all the systems.

“But we’ve simplified a lot and it now feels a lot more common to how I would have imagined to use it.

“It was a bit of a shock initially in Abu Dhabi, but on track, performance-wise, it’s working super well and it fits very well with the strength of the car as well. So, yeah, all good on that side.”

Sainz admits engine adaptation ‘the biggest change’

Carlos Sainz, who has also switched teams over the winter, revealed the Mercedes power unit is the “biggest change” that he has had to acclimatise to at Williams.

“Definitely the thing you feel the most when you change teams, the moment there’s a power unit involved, it’s the power unit,” the ex-Ferrari driver explained.

“The noises, the vibrations, the sound, everything just changes completely, so even if I went out on the pitch trying to understand the aerodynamics and the tyres and the feeling of the mechanical sides of the car, the only thing I could have to adapt for the first few laps was just how different a power unit can be.

“So yeah, that’s probably the biggest change, also the way the power unit operates in terms of switches, especially nowadays in Formula 1 with so much going on on our steering wheels, with the deployment, the battery, things like this, procedures, safety procedures of the engine and the power unit, it’s definitely the biggest change that I’m having to adapt so far in Williams.”

Esteban Ocon is pleased with his preparation going into his F1 debut with Haas

Esteban Ocon has admitted that he is now “speaking the same language” as his new colleagues at Haas prior to his race debut with the team in the 2025 Formula 1 season.

Ocon’s move to Haas is the fourth time that he has started with a new team in the sport, but it is the first occasion since he reunited with the Renault-owned operation in 2020.

The Frenchman had become accustomed to the Alpine-branded team’s methods having remained with the Anglo-French marque until an acrimonious departure last season.

With Haas the smallest team on the entire grid, Ocon has professed the preparation he has received in advance of the upcoming campaign has come as a positive surprise.

That has helped to ease his adaptation as he divulged that the initial language barrier that had existed during his initial technical discussions at Haas is no longer prevalent.

“I’ve been working in a way for five years now and you are so used to something that sometimes when you get told the same thing in a different way it can take a little bit of time for you to find out,” Ocon told select media including Motorsport Week in Bahrain last month.

“So we’ve discussed all these things and we’ve converged to now speaking the same language in a way.

“So yeah, I thought it was going to be tricky, but it got a lot smoother than expected on that sense, especially working on tyres.

“So it’s been good at the moment and as I said we need to obviously face more different circumstances and different things.”

Ocon also encountered an alternative experience in pre-season testing amid Haas’ emphasis on racking up race runs with both him and rookie team-mate Oliver Bearman.

“At the moment trouble-free days, no issues, we kept focussing on long-run performance, which is the aim, which is what the team wants,” the one-time race winner highlighted.

“And I agree with the team that it’s a new way of working for me in testing.

“But it’s definitely nice to have a lot of laps, a lot of data, a lot of different runs like that and a little satisfaction as well to be the driver that did the most laps yesterday.”

Haas restructuring has been seamless

Ocon’s arrival has coincided with a sizeable restructuring at Haas as it strives to iron out the operational errors that boss Ayao Komatsu believes cost it sixth place in 2024.

The most notable change comprised Laura Mueller being appointed the first female F1 race engineer to Ocon, who revealed that the transition has gone seamlessly to date.

“It’s been super smooth and I think that’s because the people that have been put in those positions have been super well prepared and trained,” he explained.

“Of course, when you come to the race weekend it’s always different and everybody can do mistakes, including myself.

“It’s very normal but at the moment, I’ve been learning things every single time I went out and we’ve been having very open conversations with Laura, with Francesco [Nenci], with everyone.

And it’s been going well and I’m happy with the team that we’ve got obviously going forward.”

Esteban Ocon has had Haas make an important change to his F1 car

Esteban Ocon revealed that Haas brought him a “late christmas present” in adapting his Formula 1 steering wheel.

Ocon is well-versed to using a dual-paddle clutch system on his steering wheel and tried his best to adapt to a one-paddle system that he was met with upon joining Haas from Alpine.

The Frenchman felt it wasn’t “safe” to proceed and exclaimed his surprise that Haas was able to turn things around quickly and offer a suitable clutch system for him to test with at the Bahrain International Circuit.

“There’s a lot of things that you need to adapt to and if you can’t adapt to what you have to adapt to, then you need to change things,” Ocon told select media including Motorsport Week

“So we’ve decided, for example, I got a complete new steering wheel with two clutch paddles.

“I’ve been working that way and I’ve tried the other way but I was struggling quite a bit and the team have managed to get me a late Christmas present, I would say, which has been good.

“These are things that normally take a lot of time and it’s very good that it came out in a short amount of time.”

Ocon explains his clutch preferences

Ocon’s new team-mate Oliver Bearman revealed on Wednesday that he’s perfectly capable to run with a single-paddle clutch system, saying “It’s my own special clutch that I worked hard with the guys over winter to make, and so far my starts have been good, so I’m happy with that.”

Ocon, however, who made his F1 debut back in 2016 with Manor, has long-been used to a dual-paddle system and explained why changing now wasn’t a viable option.

“First of all, going out of the garage, when you have only a right paddle, how do you do [it]?

“You need to hold the wheel when you need to hold the arm and not the end of it, which is very problematic,” he said.

“Or pit stop, when you turn left or right for me it felt unsafe, just boxing and not having the hand at the right place.

“But also the way I wanted my paddle to be designed, it just suits me better to have two paddles the way I have now and it’s working well so far.”

Overall, Ocon has been impressed with how Haas has responded to the changes he’s had to make.

Steering wheels and clutch paddles are things that a driver must be comfortable with and when changing teams can be the most important thing to fix promptly.

“But those are the things visible, there’s a lot of things underneath in my position that we managed to really fix quickly, which has been good,” Ocon added.

“And a lot of technical things on the wheel as well that we’re able to place in the same point that I’ve been using for almost 10 years now, really, even back at Force India.”

Esteban Ocon says the timeframe in which Haas completed the modifications with the steering wheel to aid his transition to the team was 'super impressive'

Esteban Ocon has revealed how Haas has “completely redesigned” the car’s steering wheel to facilitate his transition from Alpine for the Formula 1 2025 season.

Ocon leaves the Enstone-based squad after five seasons, stepping onto the podium four times for the French outfit, including his first and only victory in the sport back at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

The 28-year-old departs for the American outfit, partnering alongside rookie Oliver Bearman after the departures of Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen.

Ahead of the team’s car launch at the F1 75 live event at London’s O2 Arena, he revealed that Haas redesigned its steering wheel for him in just two months.

“There’s been a lot of different things coming in, a lot of different ways the Renault and Ferrari car work differently,” he told media including Motorsport Week.

“So, there’s been a lot of positives and I’ve been able to get around with things that I just feel super comfortable straight away and I’ve been able to work a little bit the same I’ve been working the last five years.

“That took basically two months to get it done, which was super impressive.

“The whole steering wheel needed a complete redesign for the clutch paddles, for example.

“That was a big, big job and I had that in my hands last week, which was incredible.

“The throttle pedal was the same thing, just redoing all the switches that I want like I was used to having at Force India and Alpine.

“Now at Haas, it’s been able to be done.”

Esteban Ocon believes it will be an 'interesting season' if Haas' findings from the wind tunnel data translates to on-track performances

Ocon says there was a ‘lot of positives’ after Abu Dhabi test

It wasn’t just the adjustments to the steering wheel and throttle pedal that needed doing, as Ocon went on to disclose.

“Also, the way I was using the power unit in the past, I’m going to be able to do the same racing-wise for the [energy] deployment and the cut of the deployment, which is very good,” he explained.

Ocon drove a Haas F1 car for the first time during the post-season Abu Dhabi test last December, and coming off the back of the session, the former Force India racing driver was in good spirits.

“Obviously there are a lot of positives driving the car in Abu Dhabi, I felt a lot of very positive areas and obviously there are some weaknesses that we are working on,” Ocon continued.

With pre-season testing on the horizon, February 26-28 in Bahrain, Ocon is confident that Haas’s wind tunnel findings will align with on-track performance.

“I think by day three we are going to be able to give a sensible picture, hopefully, of where everyone is,” he added.

“You always doubt, you’re never 100% sure, but I reckon it’s going to be a little bit more clear from then.

“We know where our performance should be, which is a good thing.

“We still need to validate it from the sim and check the numbers that we put in the sim were correct.

“That’s always the unknown but I have good confidence that they could be right and if they are right it should be an interesting season.

“It’s going to be close between everyone, so let’s see.”

Haas has youth and experience with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman

The 2025 Formula 1 driver line-up at Haas pits experience versus youth with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman.

Haas levelled up in 2024 as it entered a new era under Team Principal Ayao Komatsu.

A technical alliance was formed with auto giants Toyota and on-track the team successfully brought performance upgrades to the VF-24 throughout the course of the campaign.

That saw them take the fight for sixth in the Constructors’ standings all the way to the season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, coming up just short of Alpine by seven points (65 to 58).

The 65 points scored by Haas last year was a dramatic improvement compared to the return of 12 in 2023, which saw the team rooted to the bottom of the standings.

With Toyota bolstering its technical capabilities, Haas has the tools at its disposal to push on in 2025 and it is doing so with an exciting driver line-up.

The capably quick F1 veterans Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg have departed Haas for pastures new, so what can the team expect from GP winner Ocon and exciting rookie Bearman in 2025.

Oliver Bearman will embark on his rookie F1 season with Haas

Oliver Bearman

Against the odds, Bearman made three Grand Prix starts in 2024.

His sparkling F1 debut at Jeddah with Ferrari was backed up by a point with Haas in Baku.

A difficult day in the Brazil rain at Interlagos in November showed there’s work to do but Haas has a promising British teenager on its hands.

All Bearman has to do in 2025 is keep up the good work.

His promise is clear for all to see and its no wonder Haas moved early to sign him to a multi-year deal, announcing his contract last July.

Upon signing with Haas, Bearman said: “To be one of the very few people who get to do the thing what they dreamed of as a child is something truly incredible.

“To Gene [Haas], Ayao and everyone at Haas, thank you for believing in me and for trusting me to represent your team.”

Esteban Ocon

Ocon was all smiles at Yas Marina during the 2024 post-season test as his life with Haas began.

The end of his Alpine tenure was fraught with challenges but second place at Interlagos showed the Frenchman is still a talented F1 wheelman.

With an exciting rookie team-mate alongside him, Ocon must show Bearman who is boss in 2025.

But more important is the fact that as the first-ever GP winner to represent Haas on the F1 circuit, Ocon must lead the team forward.

Upon confirming the move last July, Ocon said: “I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter in my Formula 1 career and join MoneyGram Haas F1 Team from the start of the 2025 season.

“I’ll be joining a very ambitious racing team, whose spirit, work ethic, and undeniable upward trajectory has really impressed me.”

It would appear the feeling is mutual as Komatsu, who was Ocon’s race engineer during the Frenchman’s maiden run in a F1 car with Lotus in 2014, said: “It was vital we had a driver with experience in beside Bearman next year, but Esteban’s still young with a lot to prove as well.

“I think we have a hungry, dynamic driver pairing and I look forward to welcoming Esteban into MoneyGram Haas F1 Team for 2025.”

Esteban Ocon has been appointed F1's first female race engineer, Laura Muller

Haas boss Ayao Komatsu explained the groundbreaking choice to team Esteban Ocon with Formula 1’s first female race engineer, Laura Muller, due to a strong personality fit.

Haas revealed Monday that Muller had been promoted to race engineer, working with Ocon, making her the first female to hold that position in the sport (and about time to).

Muller, hailing from Germany joined Haas in 2022 working on simulator duties before stepping up to performance engineer.

Holding a Masters in Automotive Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Muller worked for ABT in DTM and Manthey Racing in GTs before moving to F1, where she has made history.

Ocon’s team-mate Oliver Bearman will also have a new race engineer, with Haas promoting Ronan O’Hare from within.

Kamotsu explained that promoting from within “sends a good message” throughout the team.

“Laura Muller and Ronan O’Hare, they’ve both been performance engineers,” Haas’ Team Principal explained (via Autosport).

“Ronan has got more experience than Laura – because he was at Williams before, whereas for Laura, Haas is the first F1 team she’s worked for.

“But they’ve both got good potential and good determination. So, we decided to promote internally because that sends a good message for everyone as well.

“Rather than go for some big names with experience from the outside, promote somebody [who] may not have enough experience to start off with, let’s say, but has potential with good work ethic, good communication.”

Komatsu: Ocon and Muller ‘will be a driving force’

Komatsu spoke specifically about appoint Muller as Ocon’s race engineer, explaining that both are equally determined characters that he sees being a good fit.

“She’s a determined character and then she’s very hard-working,” he said, adding: “She has a very good work ethic.

“In terms of looking at the personality, Esteban is a pretty determined character as well.

“So from that side, I think they will be a driving force and their personalities match.

“When she sees a problem, she digs deep, and she doesn’t stop at the first answer.

“You know, some people when they find the first answer they stop digging and they say ‘oh, great, I found the solution’ and they move on. But no, she knowns that there are new questions to answer.

“So her determination is the one thing that impresses me the most.

“She’s still quite young yet she’s still quite experienced but needs some guidance and support, but with her work ethic I think she can progress pretty quickly.”

Komatsu went onto explain Muller’s trajectory at Haas, starting with simulator work, attending race events and then rotating with performance engineers.

When it came time to appoint a new race engineer: “[Muller] expressed her interest. And in terms of her communication on the radio, she is very clear, very calm.

“When I knew Esteban was coming – I knew as well as technical side, the personality side is very important, especially if you’re a race engineer,” added Komatsu.

“So I could see the Laura/Esteban combination that could work really well.”

Muller and Ocon have already started work together, with Haas conducting a TPC programme in Jerez last week.

Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman will test the Haas VF-23 at Jerez this week

Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon will participate in the Haas Formula 1 team’s first-ever TPC running this week at the Spanish Jerez circuit.

TPC (Testing of Previous Car) regulations permit F1 teams to carry out mileage in two-year-old machines.

Predominantly this is used to evaluate rookie drivers, but teams can use 1,000 kilometres of running with existing Grand Prix drivers.

Haas’ test at Jerez will be split across two days, using the 2023 VF-23 car.

Bearman will be first out on Wednesday, followed by Toyota-backed driver Ritomo Miyata in the afternoon.

Ocon will then go out first on Thursday with Miyata completing the test in the afternoon once again.

This will mark Ocon’s second outing with Haas after he made his debut with the team in the Abu Dhabi post-season test in the VF-24.

For Bearman, this marks the beginning of his full-time F1 career, after multiple FP1 appearances with Haas last year alongside two GP starts at Baku and Sao Paulo.

The TPC test will be Bearman and Ocon’s first as team-mates.

Miyata, meanwhile, contested the Formula 2 championship with Rodin Motorsport under Toyota Gazoo Racing colours in 2024 and his involvement in the TPC outing is part of Haas’ technical alliance with the Japanese marque.

Miyata’s single-seater career will continue in F2 this year with ART Grand Prix.

Haas’ TPC debut thanks to Toyota

As the smallest team on the grid, with approximately 300 employees, Haas has never had the opportunity to spend time and resources with a TPC programme.

That has all changed now thanks to a technical alliance with Toyota, which was announced in October 2024.

The Japanese marque has committed to providing staff and drivers to assist Haas for TPC running.

Speaking to the media when the alliance was announced, Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu explained why the squad hadn’t committed to TPC running in the past and the benefits it will gain from doing so with Toyota henceforth.

“TPC is very important in terms of training personnel,” Komatsu explained.

“We have just over 300 people, we have no contingency in personnel, so if let’s say one race engineer, one performance engineer decides to leave or has a programme not to attend a race we are really struggling, on the limit all the time, and in order to improve the organisation you cannot be that kind of survival stage as a baseline.

“We’ve got to build up our organisation, so through TPC we can start training our engineers, our mechanics, having backup people there.”

Esteban Ocon was let go by Alpine one race ahead of the 2024 F1 finale

Alpine boss Oliver Oakes revealed Esteban Ocon is welcome to have a farewell with the team at its Formula 1 headquarters in Enstone.

Ocon and Alpine’s time together was cut short by one round with the Frenchman replaced by Jack Doohan for the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Frenchman quickly got on with his new life at Haas in Tuesday’s post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Despite the Alpine/Ocon partnership ending on peculiar terms, Oakes is keen for the Frenchman to have a proper farewell.

“Esteban can have a guard of honour if he wants,” he told media post-race in Abu Dhabi (via Motorsport.com).

“He’s got to come by. I’m actually serious.”

In the build-up to the Abu Dhabi GP, Ocon wrote on social media, saying: “As you know, the plan was always to race one last time this weekend and personally say goodbye to you all next week. I was looking forward to both of those things.

“This is not how I wanted things to end.”

Oakes adamant Ocon should visit Enstone one last time

Ocon and Alpine’s deal revolved around the Frenchman’s desire to get in the Haas VF-24 at the post-season test, rather than waiting until 2025 to make a start with his new team.

Alpine’s terms meant Ocon had to forgo the race to see this through, but Oakes revealed there’s no ill will held with its former driver.

“Look, people say that [treated harshly], but I think it’s not really right,” Oakes exclaimed.

“I think at the end of the day, he had an option. He chose to start with his new team earlier. That’s fine. I’m cool with that.

“We’ve been texting, and I’ve been honest, he’s welcome to come to Enstone, if you’d like, like everything was planned.

“I’ve also been really honest that he’s been a big part of the team, not just previous years, but even in my short stint.”

Ocon joined the Alpine squad back in 2020 in its final year as Renault.

During his five-year stint, Ocon scored the team’s only win in Alpine colours, the 2021 Hungarian GP and scored a further three podiums.

His early parting of ways with Alpine allowed the team’s 2025 driver, Jack Doohan, to get an early debut, which Oakes explained was a boost for the young Australian.

“I have a lot of admiration for [Ocon], but I think also we have to do what’s right for us and getting Jack in the car earlier, it’s a big advantage when we look to next year,” Oakes said.

“The teams we’re fighting have all got rookies who’ve had a bit of experience under their belt and for me, it may seem a little bit harsh, but really, that isn’t the reason at all.”

Esteban Ocon is gearing up for his next chapter with Haas

Haas has confirmed Esteban Ocon and Ryo Hirakawa will drive for the team in the Formula 1 post-season test in Abu Dhabi.

Ocon signed a multi-year deal with Haas during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend in July and his participation in the test has led to unprecedented action.

To release him from his Alpine contract, the Frenchman is forgoing driving duties in this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and shall be replaced by the Anglo-French team’s 2025 recruit, Jack Doohan.

As the team approached severing ties with Ocon early, Alpine Team Principal Oliver Oakes said “I think you could say from Esteban’s side it’s good to move on early. I think it suits everybody.”

That leaves Ocon ample time to prepare for his post-season testing debut with his new employer, Haas.

Ocon’s choice to join Haas was down to being “convinced” by Team Principal Ayoa Komatsu and his faith was reinforced upon the team signing a technical alliance with Toyota.

“He didn’t specifically talk about [Toyota], but he really told me what his plan was to take this team to the next level and help on the things that the team have the chance to improve on” Ocon said last month.

“He convinced me back then and it reinforces me to clearly trust him for the future. I think it’s exciting times for the teams ahead.”

Ryo Hirakawa early sign of Haas, Toyota relationship bearing fruit

Haas’ alliance with Toyota goes beyond mere technical expertise with the Japanese manufacturer committing to providing its drivers for testing duties.

That is bearing fruit for the first time thanks to Hirakawa filling Haas’ rookie requirements for the post-season test.

Hirakawa is a prominent member of Toyota Gazoo Racing‘s Hypercar efforts in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Japanese driver is a Le Mans winner and twice champion in FIA WEC.

He will have a busy time in Abu Dhabi, with his commitments as a McLaren Reserve Driver meaning he is also driving the MCL38 during FP1 of the Abu Dhabi GP.
